Not really a regional thing... I've seen the word "ablutions" used in literature a LOT. Now, don't ask if I've ever heard anyone use it in common conversation here in the U.S., but I have seen it!

Ah, that is probably it. While I read a lot to, just haven't seen it before or noticed it. Just as sodden isn't really used in conversation (more often soaked), it's present heavily in writing to spice up wording.
