"Please Shippo-chan! Rin can't run anymore!"

Fists opening and closing in agitation, the young demon paused in his exploration of the area and turned to his best friend. Her ragged breathing and ruddy hue couldn't mask the terror in her eyes, the same terror that he could see in the reflection of his own face. Why did they have to go off alone, even when Kagome had told them to stay close by? Of course the two lizard youkai would be drawn to their happy cries - they'd only managed to get away because their would be murderers weren't very bright.

Alert to every sound, Shippo decided that they had had enough of a break and needed to get going immediately.

"Rin, can you keep running?" The kitsune's quiet plea betrayed his fear, but it also showed his determination to see the human girl to safety.

Her fierce nod caused a small smile to light up his face. Holding out his hand, Rin took it without hesitation and they faced forward, small chests puffed out with confidence. They could do this.

A crash behind them followed by loud hissing startled them into movement, and the brave children ran for their lives.
