Taiyaki!

If you think of Sesshoumaru when you watch it, it's so much funnier.

it kind of also begs the question of the honorific -sama or -dono? since -dono is supposed to convey more respect that -sama but -dono is not commonplace anymore.

weird.

TaiDai....Tydye?

LOL sorry couldn't resist. Tai = fish huh? Taiyaki!
With all the confusion between Tai and Dai I just started saying InuYoukai lol. I always find the easy way out -- unless someone tell me that Inu doesn't really mean dog then I'm screwed.

Yeah I know. I never knew. I read so many fic with either. But it does make sense, the Dai part. I bet someone misheard it at some point and it went from there.

Actually "Dai" means big, great, large, etc. So it can also mean "Great Demon", which is honestly what I prefer (as opposed to Big).

I had to learn the Dai/Tai difference from a few native speakers (and the power of the Internet). Daiyoukai is correct, Taiyoukai is incorrect. I had the native speakers giggle at me for the "Tai" bit when I asked.

I've known that the correct term was "daiyoukai" for a while now. But, using "taiyoukai" has always been habit. So when I write, I automatically write it out. But, I try to substitute it with "demon lord" instead and I try to phrase te sentence in a way where "demon lord" fits better to avoid the translation error that comes with using "taiyoukai".

Re:Tai or Dai? 14 Years, 12 Months ago Karma: 27
I always thought it was TaiYoukai as well. It was only when I was doing research for my story and visited Rumiko World that I found out I was wrong. Her web site labels him as a DaiYoukai, but it doesn't give the definition of what that word means. So I looked it up on Wikipedia and found out that Dai means "big", and since we all know that Youkai means "Demon" you come up with "Big Demon." Although apparently Youkai can mean spirit or monster as well.

P.S. Dai can also mean great. Probably why Rumiko gave him that title.

Dai means big. TaiYoukai is wrong according to Rumiko's webpage. She always addresses Sesshoumaru as a DaiYoukai. Though it can be spelled DaiYokai with an accent over the O. I have a friend who is Japanese and he told me that Tai means fish, and he too said that the correct title is DaiYoukai. Visit Rumiko World (her official web page) for verification.

So, I was just wondering what the difference between daiyoukai and taiyoukai was. I've seen author's predominantly use tiayoukai in their fics, but every so often there's a dai thrown in the mix.

Is it just a matter of preference? Or is there a difference?
