Maybe "Just a Mistake" by Ravenskye Blackhawk on ff.net? Even if that's not the one you are looking for, it fits the criteria, and it is one of the best-written, best-plotted and original stories I have ever read, so check it out! I wish I could make a link for you, but I just can't make one...
