Hello Dokuga!
I have a quick question.
Is it against the rules to base a fanfic off of a novel I just finished reading - using Sesshomaru and Kagome as well as other members of the InuYasha cast of course - and tweaking the story a bit? Obviously it won't be word for word, and the story will make the 'universe' AU. But the story line will be used, as well as the title with a small change.
Would this be against the rules?
If not, could someone please explain what should/shouldn't be done while writing?
All due credit will be given to the author of the original story.

Hmmm from what I know is that it depends on the author (the real books author). On the website, Fanfiction.net there are some author's who don't want fanfics based off their works. Here's a list of them:


Anne Rice
Archie comics
Dennis L. McKiernan
Irene Radford
J.R. Ward
Laurell K. Hamilton
Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb
P.N. Elrod
Raymond Feist
Robin Hobb
Robin McKinley
Terry Goodkind

Really depends on the real author. Hope that helps a little

I've seen people do this with popular movies but I don't know if it's okay to do it with a book. I'd PM a mod about it just to be sure.

Anything not from you must be cited/have a disclaimer as far as I know. Influence is obviously heavy in fanfiction, but plagiarism is often a touchy subject. Of course, the mods are always a good place to ask, but to be safe disclaimer and make it apparent, whether at the beginning or the end, what ideas are not yours.
However, there have been plenty of fanfictions, even challenges, where books are used for the muse. A good place to start for rules is in Forum>Fanfiction>Challenges.
