From what I remember of the plot....

The jewel is completed, but Midoriko appears and demands that either Kagome or Kikyou takes her place
Midoriko is free and Kagome takes her place
Midoriko tries to kill Sess, with the eventual goal of killing all youkai,
Sess defeats her, and has to bind Kagome's soul to his
they have ot wait for 500 years for Kagome to be able to take corporeal form again
there are all sorts of fun scenes in between those occurences
The timeline is altered and so in the new future, demons exist, but Kagome's family does not.

Sorry that I have to bug y'all with this. I've been searching for it for DAYS
