California Dreaming by Fox

California Bound

I would just like to state, first and for most, that the places mentioned are fictional and I am not american so don't kill me if some information is slightly off. Other than that welcome the first chapter of California Dreaming. This is set in modern times. Either way I hope you enjoy!

Many children complain about having a hard life. In some cases these whining children have no right at all to, well, whine. Many children don't complain about having a hard life. In some cases these children have the right to complain but they rise above self pity and try and move on with their lives.

It was a warm day in Sunny Brooke, Maryland. The grass was green and the birds where chirping. The hot summer weather didn't bother the natives but the cool breezes made everything just a bit more comfortable.

A silver minivan pulled up into the driveway of Sunny Brooke's adoption agency. The minivan parked in the space indicated and got out.

The driver had long raven black hair that was up in a pony tail and a body models would die for.

The driver made her way to the front door, taking off her sunglasses to show two beautiful baby blue eyes.

She stepped into the adoption agency and was greeted warmly by the receptionist and children that were walking around the halls.

She made her way to the back of the center and knocked on a door that read 'director'.

"Come in." A male voice announced.

The girl opened the door, stepped in, closed the door behind her and her guard went up.

"Now, now Kagome there is no need to get defensive." The director announced.

"Well it's not everyday that you walk into an office and find a full blooded demon." The girl hissed back.

The girl was a miko, meaning she could heal people and sense demons. Not demons like in the exorcist that wasn't to kill you but the demons that lived in a human society just wanting to preserve their heritage.

"Kagome, why don't you take a seat?" The director asked.

Kagome, the driver, nodded and sat down in the seat indicated.

"Kagome, I would like you to meet Mr. Tashio." The director announced.

"Hello." Kagome replied.

"So, what's this all about Larry?" Kagome asked the director.

"Well Kagome, it seems that Mr. Tashio here wants to...umm..." Larry, the director stumbled.

"He wants to what?" Kagome asked.

"I want to adopt you." Mr. Tashio announced.

Kagome looked between the two gentlemen.

"Are you serious?" Kagome asked.

"Yes he is serious Kagome." Larry sighed.

"No dice! That's bullshit!" Kagome announced, standing up.

"Kagome will you just listen for a minute?" Larry asked.

"Listen to what? I'm out of the system! I'm out! I'm doing just fine on my own. What the hell Larry?" Kagome fumed.

She had recently turned seventeen, making her ineligible for adoption.

"Well, technically, you're not." Larry sighed.

"What!" Kagome screamed.

"According to Maryland law you are 'out' of the system but according to California law you can not be 'let out' of the system until you are eighteen, an official adult." Larry told her, trying to calm her down.

"What are you saying?" Kagome asked, calming herself.

"Kagome, just listen to what Mr. Tashio has to say before you make you decision to accept or reject his offer." Larry announced.

Kagome nodded and sat back down, facing Mr. Tashio. Her rational mind had kicked in...good timing.

"Now Kagome, I am well aware that you do not want to be adopted but do not think of this as a mere adoption. I have been looking for you for a great amount of time. You see, I knew your mother, Saerwen. She was a dear friend of mine. When I found out she had passed on I tried to contact your father in hopes he would let me have custody over you. Instead he went and gave you up for adoption without telling anyone of your whereabouts. I have searched for seventeen years for you. By chance my son was looking on the internet and I saw the article in the paper about you being nominated for one of top 20 under 20. I flew out from California in hopes that you would return home with me so I could show you the life you were destined to have." Mr. Tashio announced.

Kagome was shocked to say the least. She had never imagined that this man...demon...could have possibly known her mother and had been friends with her. It would make sense though, her mother was a miko and from what she knew about her she was very active in the demon culture.

Then it clicked in Kagome's head.

"Did you say California?" Kagome asked.

"Yes I did, is that a problem?" Mr. Tashio asked her.

"Well yeah, I can't leave the centre. What are the kids going to do without me?" Kagome asked.

"Kagome, don't worry about the others, they'll understand. This is about your future. Mr. Tashio's offer is very intriguing and I think it would be in your best interest to take the offer." Larry told her.

Kagome sighed and ran her head through her hair.

"Alright, I'll go." Kagome announced.

"Well then we can go and catch our flight back to California. Is there anywhere you would need to stop before we left?" Mr. Tashio asked Kagome.

"What? Now? Don't you have paperwork to fill out?" Kagome questioned.

"Already done Kagome. We knew you would come around." Larry told her with a wink.

Kagome gave her director a smile and nodded as she followed Mr. Tashio out to the parking lot where he led her to a rental Lexus.

Kagome watched as her home, the only home she ever had, faded away in the distance and prayed she had made the right decision.

So there you have it, a short introduction chapter. I will update soon but I will tell you that I'm sick and have been for the past few days so I make no pormises on the chapter update deadline. Best wishes
