Bad Moon Rising by xactually

Chapter One

The tall, elegant figure stood on the top of the hill, staring out across the field. The grass was tall, almost up to his knees. He frowned as he looked up at the moon, though it looked perfectly normal on that particular night. It really wasn't actually the moon he was frowning at, but the image he saw in the moon. It was the face of a girl... A human girl.

Not that stupid human wench again... he thought to himself, but it wasn't as though thinking such a thing made a difference. Inuyasha's wench... Kagome... Why does she plague my mind like this?

He would have slashed at the moon if he could have, but even he, the great Lord Sesshoumaru, knew his limits. He sighed and turned away from the moon, wishing for it to go away. He slowly made his way into the forest that lead to anywhere, remembering an old song he knew from his father.

I see a bad moon rising,

I see trouble on the way.

I see earthquakes and lightning,

I see bad times today.

And it certainly was a bad moon rising for the demon lord. As he walked through the trees, he looked up to see the moon right above him, with Kagome's face smiling softly down on him. It was like the moon was following him, taunting him... Daring him to give in to the temptations that he only wished he could banish.

So don't come 'round tonight,

It's bound to take your life.

There's a bad moon on the rise.

Ah, but if only it were that simple. If only a bad moon such as this would simply take his life, and not wrench at the heart that he claimed not to have. The wind howled and blew Sesshoumaru's long white hair to his side for a moment before settling back into place among the silence. He tried to ignore the moon hovering above him, and he would have succeeded, if not for the lingering thought that maybe he wanted to see her face above him...

I hear hurricanes a-blowing,

I fear the end is coming soon.

I fear rivers overflowing,

I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Hurricanes and rivers... Ha. As if a lord as great as he was afraid of such trivial things. He was afraid of nothing... Was he? He banished the question. Of course not. He was great, almighty and powerful. He was immortal, infamous and unbeatable. He was... falling for a human girl. And that scared him.

So don't come 'round tonight,

It's bound to take your life.

There's a bad moon on the rise.

He couldn't help it anymore. He looked up at the moon, invisioning Kagome's face there, and stopped walking for a moment to simply gaze up at her. Suddenly all he saw was the back of her head though, because she had turned and run back to Inuyasha. He looked away quickly and began to walk again, his face back to its usual dull frown.

Hope you have got your things together.

Hope you are quite prepared to die.

Looks like we're in for nasty weather,

One eye is taken for an eye.

Heh. I could stand losing an eye. Sesshoumaru thought dully, for he knew that losing an eye was much easier than losing something he never had. He knew Kagome was never his, and judging by the way she and his half-brother got along, chances are he never would.

So don't come 'round tonight,

It's bound to take your life.

There's a bad moon on the rise.

For once, he could say he wanted something else more than he wanted the Tetsusaiga. He grinned inwardly.

So don't come 'round tonight,

It's bound to take your life.

There's a bad moon on the rise.

He looked up at the moon and saw that Kagome's face had returned to tease him. It was following him, her smile raining down on him as he trudged on through the night. He let his grin escape from inside him and it spread across his lips as he muttered the last line of the song.

"There's a bad moon on the rise."

Owari.
