Thou Shan't Return by Blue-kisses

Thou Shall Return

What was the possibility that maybe or perhaps today she would make it down the well?

Maybe she was as crazy as the doctors thought she was, it had been four years since she had last been through the well, or maybe it hadn't happened at all? Maybe she had imagined the whole legend that was her, maybe she wasn't even Kagome Higurashi like they all told her?

What if she wasn't really there at all? Kagome shook her raven head in an attempt to shake away the crazed thoughts. It had been four long years since she had seen the moronic hanyou. Four very long years. It really was a mystery that she had even survived this long.

A tiny voice next to her said something, something that reminded her of the hanyou she so much loved, "Mommy, why were you gone so long?"

Her eyes traveled to her son Coenu, her son, her and Inuyasha's son. Yes, before she had been thrown back into her world which wasn't really hers, they had had a son. He hadn't gotten to name him, for she had had him in her world. This world, she constantly reminded herself, for it wasn't her world, not anymore. She had no world. Kagome was just there. There was no place she belonged.

"I'm sorry." Kagome said, lifting her son into her arms and giving him a chaste kiss on the forehead. His giggle sounded through the small shrine.

Her shrine. It had been passed to her, or what was left of it. One day, while at the community collage, there had been a fire that swept through the neighborhood.

Let's just say she was the only one who had come out alright, just her and her son. The pain of seeing her mother rushed to the hospital, the scent of scorched skin floating heavily after her would be the most painful thing she would have to endure.

Earlier that year, Jii-chan had died of cancer, something that seemed to kill most of the males in her home, her father included. Tears formed at the edges of her eyes as she thought of Souta, he too had been lucky, like her. He was married now, at only sixteen.

His girlfriend had been pregnant for six months now, and Kagome suspected it to be a baby girl, she would have a little niece. She had been hoping that she would have a girl but she was perfectly happy with her little Coenu, but if it had been a girl, she would have appeared like Kagome.

Coenu was the spitting image of his brash father with the attitude to match. The same silver hair and golden eyes, his attitude brash and rather short tempered. All wrapped into a darling little package.

"Mommy, are you going to try again?" Coenu asked, his eyes glazing over in worry. Even at the tender age of four, he knew his mommy better than anyone, especially at a painful time such as this.

"Yes." Kagome turned away from him, she knew he was worried. She hated worrying him, but she had to try, for her own sanity. She had to make it through the well, she just had to.

"I'm gonna go with you." He said, his golden eyes glittering in the sunlight. She sighed, it was hard getting used to the fact that his brain seemed more developed than most children. Hell, when he got to middle school, he'd probably be smarter than her!

"Ok, let's go baby." He sighed and snuggled into her chest as she made her way to the well. 'What if you make it through? You're not prepared!' A tiny voice screamed in her head.

What if I do?

Shrugging, she jumped. Her heart skipped a beat as the feathery light feeling fluttered through her. It was the same as four years ago.

She heard her son gasp and she hugged him closer, her senses were going crazy. The blue light surrounding them disappeared and Kagome looked up. She frowned when she noticed a roof over their heads.

"Hello?" Kagome called up, looking around to find a way to climb up. There was none save the rope hanging down, Kagome stared hard at the rope, trying to decipher whether she could climb it or not. As she had said, four long years since she had been in the past, even she (although grudgingly) admitted she had gained a few pounds.

Placing her hands on the rope, she tried lifting herself up. Coenu clutched her neck, she had set him on her back so that she had full use of all her limbs. Finding that this didn't work she placed her feet against the wall and tugged. The rope came a little farther down and Kagome frowned. What if it fell while they were climbing?

Grabbing the rope she hung on it for awhile and seeing that it hadn't fallen she tied the rope around her waist and placed her hands above her and her feet against the wall and used the rope as a clutch while her feet steadied her.

In a matter of minutes she had made it to the top of the well, she almost thought she was back in her era, but the clear blue skies and no shrine was more than an assurance that it wasn't Tokyo.

"I don't think we're in Kansas anymore..." She said, looking around. A breeze lifted through her hair and she pulled her son to her. "Inuyasha?" She called into the wind in hopes that the hanyou was still around.

Her hand grasped the jewel around her neck, the Shikon-no-tama. Her worst enemy lay within her. The soul of Kikyou and Midoriko. She didn't know.

"Who are you?" Turning swiftly, Kagome had barley enough time to doge the arrow the intruder sent her way. Standing up, Kagome growled. This woman, she noticed looked vaguely familiar. Especially with her bright brown eyes. "Rin?" Kagome whispered.

"Do I know you?" The girl asked, and Kagome was almost positive of it. How long had she been gone? This girl looked almost thirteen. It was if she was gone more than four years.

"I'm Kagome, protector of the Shikon Jewel." Kagome said, watching her reaction carefully. The girl gaped slightly, then she said, in almost a whisper, "Kagome-chan?"

Dropping her arrows, the girl launched herself at Kagome, and threw her arms around the poor woman. Gasping for breath kagome hugged the girl back, then pulled Coenu to the front, away from where he was hiding behind her legs.

"Coenu, sweetie this is a good friend of mine, her names Rin." Kagome said, smiling softly. Coenu looked at Rin with his golden eyes, trying to decide whether his mother was ok or not.

"But you said Rin was seven when you last saw her." Coenu said, squinting up at the teenager. Kagome smiled, "I guess times different here."

"Rin, is Inuyasha here?" Kagome asked, hope glittering in her eyes. Her hope was squashed when Rin shook her head.

"Kagome, I'm so sorry, he, he died two years ago. A boar youkai, he had attacked him on the new moon..." Rin said softly. Kagome's eyes filled with tears and she hugged her son close to her. Long ago she had forgotten her love for the hanyou, now her pain lay in the fact that her son was father-less.

"What about Sango and Miroku, or my dear little Shippo?" Her hope blossomed when Rin nodded slightly, "They are with Lord Sesshomaru-sama. He promised his brother, that in case you ever came back, to take care of them for you..."

"Why'd he leave you behind?" Kagome asked, sitting on a log. Rin sat beside her and looked down sadly, "When we, Sesshomaru-sama and I realized that I contained miko powers, he sought to find the best miko, it turned to be the miko of this village."

'Lady Kaede...' Kagome nodded for her to continue.

"Twice a week I would come to train, but one day, while fighting, my powers , I lost control of them, and I...killed...Jaken..." She choked on her words as tears fell in droplets down her rosy cheeks. "Lord Sesshomaru-sama's healing...sword...it wouldn't heal Jaken..." Kagome pulled the girl in an embrace. Rubbing soothing circles on Rin's back she cooed at her, trying to make her feel better.

"Lord Sesshomaru left me here to train, then Lady Kaede died, and I was forced to stay and be village miko. I would've asked my Lord Sesshomaru-sama to free me, but I'm a miko, it's my duty to save them, to protect them, even if it keeps me away from my father." Her heart went out to Rin as she found herself at a loss of words at the young girl's sense of duty.

"Oh, Rin..."

Hours later, Kagome found herself laying on a futon, with Rin laying beside her. Night had roused from its slumber and made itself known. Once morning came, Kagome found herself being ushered about with Rin, meeting new villagers.

"Hello Toki, who is you wife?" Rin greeted, stepping into the hut. A young man, whom Kagome knew was Toki, smiled. "Good, she is fairing well, thanks to your herbs." The blonde haired man replied.

"Oh, hello." He said, noticing Kagome standing quietly by the door. "Toki, this is Kagome, she's the guard-"

Kagome clamped a hand over Rin's mouth before she finished her sentence, she wanted no one to know of her journeys. Giving Rin the evil eye, she turned to the man and said, "My name is Higurashi Kagome, I'm the new miko in the village, I'll be training your current miko for awhile."

The man, Toki, shrugged at the strange exchange between the mikos and smiled welcomingly. Turning to the bed, Kagome had to muffle her giggles as she looked at the enlarged woman on the bed.

"So you're going to have a baby?" Kagome squealed in delight and ranted on how much she loved babies. The woman stared at her, smiling. "Oh, you're a charming one. How long will you be staying in our village?"

"Not to long unfortunately, I must make the journey to Sesshomaru." Kagome said.

"You know him personally? I've never heard of you, surely if he knew you, we would've heard of you."

"Oh, my family was an old friend of his, he never minded when I was little formalities never were important to me, and old habits are hard to break..." she replied, smiling faintly, as if remembering a fond memory. The lie worked for the woman smiled and patted her hand.

"Well, we must be going, Kagome has to ready herself for her journey." Rin waved and once again ushered Kagome around until they made it to the market place. After minutes of shopping, Rin found what she was looking for.

It was a small cat, similar to Kirara and Kagome had trouble looking at her for it reminded her of the tiny fire neko. Rin shook her head seeing Kagome's pained expression and turned to the next animal, a dragon. She knew they could enlarge should the time arise and it could travel faster than the nekos.

"How much?" She asked the shopkeeper. He replied, "You can have him, he's bite every customer I've had, take and go away." Kagome huffed, how ruse, she fumed.

Moving her hand away, she noticed the shop keeper watching her and she asked, "What now?"

"If he bites you, I'm not responsible..." Kagome sighed and continued, much to the surprise of the shop keeper, the dragon wrapped its petite body around her arm, coiling around, it looked as if it was looking lovingly at her.

"Well, this is new. That'll be seven-" Rin glared at him and he shut up while Kagome giggled and patted the dragon's head. "What's his name?"

"What?" The shop keeper asked, obviously not listening.

"What's his name?" kagome repeated. "She doesn't have one." Studying the dragon Kagome noticed the white skin and the blue eyes. "Sakura, her names Sakura."

Morning came and Kagome found herself reluctant to board Sakura, who had become quickly attached to Kagome.

"Good-bye kagome-chan, I'll miss you very much, give my salutations to Lord Sesshomaru for me." Rin yelled up as Kagome boarded the white dragon who had transformed to her bigger form.

"I will, I might even get him to visit you!" Kagome yelled, waving until she was out of view. Coenu had yet to say anything since she had returned with the dragon the night before. "What's the matter Coenu?"

"Nothing mommy." She sighed and pulled him to sit on her lap, he squeaked and Kagome realized that her son was afraid of heights.

"Its ok..." She sang to him until he fell asleep, she assumed this the best way so tha she could get some thinking in.

Looking down below, it so reminded her of her shard hunting. The scene reminded her of the final battle.

The day was imbedded clearly in her mind, she remembered being blown away by Naraku's miasma.

Inuyasha had drawn his sword and swung the wind scar, it had made minimal damage. Naraku had chuckled, thinking he would win, but they had a secret weapon, Kikyou, who had turned into a sister, not Sango and Kikyou were her sisters.

She had shot an arrow at him, making a pathway for Inuyasha and Kikyou did so, for Miroku and Sango, who swung her boomerang.

The hanyou died instantly and even if he had not, Kagome had his jewels along with Kouga's. The jewel had been completed that very same moment, but she had been returned to her time moments later.

Lying on the floor of the well had been the mot painful thing, or perhaps it was the broken ankles she hosted after jumping into the well multiple times.

"Mommy, where are we?" her son's grogginess made her smile and she peered down at her son.

Coenu was pointing to a castle and Kagome felt relieved that they were there, she wouldn't have been able to contain herself. Sending Sakura down to the front gates, Kagome was stopped by several youkai guards.

"Halt! How are you?" One shouted. Kagome smiled warmly and said, "I'm Kagome Higurashi, I'm here to see Sesshomaru."

Each guard took a long look at her before nodding. The gates opened for her and she took a fleeting step forward. Soon, kagome found herself face to face with the ones she had missed ever so dearly.

He son, who had fallen into a deeper slumber than Kagome had expected, decided at the moment to wake. He let out a wail, realizing he had no idea where he was. Once Kagome clutched onto him, he quieted.

"Hey guys..."
