Kon: But... but... -runs off crying-

"Kagome?"

"Y-yes?" a small girl of about 7 years of age looked up from her arms. Pure misery could be easily seen on her tear-streaked face.

"Your mother wishes to see you. Go to her quickly, she has but a little time left," the nurse replied kindly. Kagome ran to her mother's side.

"Yes mama?"

"K-Kagome, don't cry. I'll always be with you. Remember that. As long as you remember me, I will exist. The only way to truly die is to be forgotten. Never forget even the worst of your memories. Remember, I-I l-love you....always." Her eyes closed, and all the breath escaped from her body.

"NO!! MAMA!!!!"

Kagome sat there, crying into her dead mother's chest.

Her father came in.

"So, she is dead then..." was all he said.

Then he walked away, dragging the sobbing girl on his shoulder.

2 Weeks Later...

"GET UP YOU ROTTEN GIRL!"

"Yes."

WHAT?!?"

"Yes sir."

"That's better. Now make me breakfast and then prepare yourself to meet you new mother."

"Yes sir."

He walked out of the room, leaving her there to change.

A few hours later...

"Ah, so this is Kagome..." a rather plump and ugly woman said. Her beady black eyes took in Kagome's raven black hair, and deep, dark blue eyes with disdain.

"Yes ma'am. I am very pleased to meet you." Kagome bowed politely.

"And such good manners," came the sarcastic tone of her new step brother. His thin arms wrapped around his mother's chubby ones. She ran her fingers through his brown hair affectionately.

"Well? What are you standing here for? GET BACK TO WORK!!!" her father commanded.

"Yes sir."

She walked calmly away. (A/N: Yes, I know that Kagome has brown eyes, but I like her better with blue ones. It makes her different.)

9 years passed, and Kagome was little better off. Her father had long since passed away, and she had grieved. She now had to start a different school because her step-mother had insisted that they move out of this "dump". It was the house that Kagome had grown up in. Her mother's home. She wept.

"Step-mother, why can we not stay? I beg of you! Let us stay here!" she sobbed.

"Iie! We cannot stay here! This place is too small and ill furnished! And if you disobey me again, I will give you the chain! Pack your things."

"Yes step-mother."

"He he! Little Kagome doesn't wanna leave her mama's house! HA HA!! WHAT A WHIMP!" cried the now 15 year old Souta.

To this, she said nothing. She remembered her promise to her father on his dying bed.

~*~FLASHBACK! RUN AWAY! ~*~

"Kagome, please forgive me for how I treated you. I regret it now. I ask of you only this: please try not to hate. Try to forgive those who wronged you. I know I ask much, but try. Please."

"I will father, and I forgive you."

"I want you to know, that I loved your mother, very much. I am sorry she is dead."

Tears welled up in Kagome's eyes.

"You look so much like her. Same eyes. Same raven hair. Same wonderful smile. I love you. My Kagome."

"I love you to Papa."

He passed with a smile on his lips.

~*~ END FLASHBACK! IT'S SAFE TO COME BACK NOW!!!~*~

"Very well, I will collect my things."

Up in her room, Kagome packed her few things, and collapsed on her small bed, if it could be called that. She lay there for a while, fighting tears that threatened to fall.

~No, I won't cry. Not anymore! They can beat me, and they can scold me, but they can't get inside my mind. I won't let them. I WILL NOT SHOW THEM WEAKNESS! ~

With that final thought, her tears vanished, and she jumped up. She went to her mother's room (the one room that was kept in tact out of respect of Kagome's mother).

Once there, she began packing the few things she could afford to take without her step-family getting suspicious. She took 3 dresses, a silver comb and mirror, and her mother's favorite necklace. (I'll describe the dresses later)

The necklace was beautiful. It had a delicate silver chain inset with diamonds. A tiny pendant hung gracefully from it. A silver dragon with a sword piercing it's heart. Carefully cut rubies flowed from the wound, like blood. But even in it's death, the dragon's stance bore the look of pride. It looked like it died fighting, with no regrets. It's arms were up, showing of deadly claws. It's fangs were showing, as if it were growling. It was a terrifyingly beautiful thing, yet it held sadness. It didn't want to die. As you can tell by my description, it was an extraordinary piece of jewelry.

(A/N: I know that it's probably impossible to get this from a necklace, but this is my story, and I can do what I want.)

Kagome put on the necklace and hid it under her shirt.

~They won't take this from me. I won't let them. ~

She left, and brought down her one suitcase. They were gone within an hour. They would have left sooner, but Souta held them up. Kagome got hit for it.

"You should have helped him you stupid thing! Why we keep you, I will never know. Be thankful we didn't put you in an orphanage!"

"Yes step-mother, I am thankful to you. Please forgive me."

~*~

Kon: Well, that's it!

FP: Kagome is going along with them, and obeying in respect of her father. Otherwise, she would kick 'em all and run off to the orphanage.

Kon: Shut up FP! I'm the author, I'm the one who tells the readers things! -tosses FP more chocolate-

FP: Yes ma'am! -salutes and then eats chocolate-

Sesshomaru: ...

Kagome: Can I kick them anyway?

Kon: No.

Inuyasha: HEY! WHY WASN'T I IN HERE?!?

Sesshomaru: Be quiet half-breed. You make your appearance in the next chapter.

Inuyasha: SHUT UP SESSHOMARU!!! -draws sword-

Kagome: SIT!! *BOOM!*

Kouga: Way to show the mutt-face! So, how has my woman been?

Inuyasha: SHE AIN'T YOUR WOMAN YA WHIMPY WOLF!!

Sesshomaru: -takes Kagome's hand, and pulls her gently to him-

Kagome: -goofy smile-

Kouga and Inuyasha: -don't notice-

Kon: Ugh! -rolls eyes-
