What I find most engaging about this first chapter is that it could easily stand as a one-shot. Alone, it's a satisfying read, but of course I'd love to read more! ^_^ You've matched the emotion to the drizzle outside their cave - a soft mix of melancholy and hope, of cloudiness and new beginnings. I loved the ease of Kagome and Sesshoumaru's interaction, and the paragraph about Rin's need for a mother and Shippou's need for a father was my favorite. I'm anxious to see what schemes they cook up to make their family complete.

Great start!
