Where violence is concerned within a story, is there a level at which you are turned off or are you pretty accepting of it?

Personally, for myself, a few action scenes are great in a story. I don't like a whole lot cause I'm more of a plot, character build, and mystery lover. Too much angst and violence kinda bums me out. I always give every story a try though!

As for my self I like a bit of gore and violence where it is clearly necessary within the plot of the story. I like the drama, suspense and romance, however I have nothing against action in a story. That's just my feelings on it though, can't speak for anyone else but myself.

I'm okay with action, gore and violence as long as it's written write into the story. The only things that turn me from a well written tale is over-angst or rape scenes.

I think that's a pretty broad question to try to answer. It's certainly hard to draw a line as to how much is too much, since it greatly depends on what kind of violence is happening in the story (e.g. physical, psychological/emotional, sexual etc.) as well as to how it is described and in how great a detail.

I'm sure that for everyone of us, it's not always a question of how much, but of what. Certain acts of violence cross the line; what they are depends on the person.

To me, also, one crucial factor is the overall mood of the story. I don't mind some angst and violence in the story, as long as they do not wholly permeate the story. It is easier to read along, if there is still hope.

The question is really is it violence for violence sake, or does it move along the plot?

If it is necessary, I'm fine with a lot of violence and gore.

If it is there just to be there, it is a bit of an overload.

I agree with MomoDesu. If there's is a reason for the violence, then I have no problem with it. If the violence is 'just because' then no. That's generally how everything works for me (Including fluffy romance).
