Chapter One: Two Sides of a Demon

________________________________________________

“O my don’t you look pretty today, Kagome-chan. What is the occasion?”

A girl stopped reviewing herself in her bedroom mirror to glance over her shoulder. Mrs. Higurashi stood in the doorway, a hamper full of laundry on her hip. The older woman had a curious but pleasant expression as she regarded her eighteen year old daughter’s appearance. Kagome flushed. She had been gone from the Sengoku Jidai for two weeks now and knew InuYasha would not be in a good mood when she returned today. He never was when she left. So she hoped if she looked pretty, maybe he’d become too flustered to be sour as he was prone to be when she visited her home for longer than a few hours.

Kagome mentally sighed. Since they had defeated Naraku a few months ago, it was apparent to everyone that InuYasha was bored without something to amuse him. Thus whenever she went home to the future to study for her college entrance exams, he would huff and puff like a child who’s favourite toy had been confiscated from him. While she loved her life in the past it didn’t mean she could forget about her life in the future. Her family was here and her mother wanted to see her go to college. Even though it was no longer a plan for Kagome. She no longer felt drawn back home except for her family.

Shyly, she shrugged nonchalantly at her watching parent.

“Nothing really. It’s just a dress, Momma.” She replied, avoiding eye contact with the woman in case she noticed her fib.

Mrs. Higurashi raised a brow as she eyed her daughter. A dress made of soft rose pink material with a sweetheart neckline hugged her small but curvy body, the bottom layered with frilly ruffles from her waist to the hemline that stopped mid-thigh. Her long, slim legs were clad in white stockings and a loose yellow cardigan covered her arms as it was the beginning of fall. Mrs. Higurashi smiled gently. Kagome had grown so beautiful in the last few years; she had truly blossomed into a wonderful woman. Her daughter was not just outwardly attractive but as a whole, a beautiful soul.

The woman reviewed her daughter who had returned to fidget with a few strands of her loose onyx strands that hung to her tiny waist in soft waves. Even from where she stood, the woman could see the nervous twitching in the girl’s fingers.

Humming pleasantly, Mrs. Higurashi said over her shoulder coyly, “Well for “just a dress” it looks beautiful, dear. I think InuYasha will think so as well.”

Kagome froze. How the Hell did she…? She quickly looked over her shoulder only to see her mother had already slipped away. The miko returned her gaze on her reflection. Her lightly made up face was now bright red. Her shoulders lowered. Damnit. She was caught. Her sapphire eyes narrowed at the incriminating image of her flushed face. Was she really that transparent? Or was her Mother just that intuitive?

Her brow furrowing, Kagome anxiously placed a few more glossy tresses into place. She was putting off the inevitable. She had to go back to Edo and see her friends… and InuYasha. The priestess paused her shaky attempts at distraction. She stared at her reflection thoughtfully. Naraku had been gone for months. Kikyou was laid to rest, Japan was safe and her friends now flourished with the peace they had bleed and fought for. Miroku and Sango had married and were now expecting their third child. While she was happy for the pair, the girl couldn't help the twinge of jealousy and sadness she felt when she saw her friends and their blossoming lives together.

Even the smallest companion of the inu tachi had found Shippou had found a lone kistune wanderer, Shuujo, who was training him in combat and kistune abilities. Kohaku had returned from Sesshoumaru’s lands with Rin who now both resided in the village with Sesshoumaru’s approval. The demon Lord even checked up on the two of them but she suspected it was mostly to see Rin. The miko’s sapphire eyes became sad, her hands falling to her sides. Everyone was so happy. Everyone had found their “happily ever after” after the battle. Everyone but she and InuYasha.

The girl glanced at the pictures on her wardrobe, each framed and placed in plain view. They were moments that were dear to her heart. Several featured the inu-tachi group during various moments she had luckily captured. Her eyes drifted to the few of just herself and InuYasha. In each photo she was clearly excited and flustered while InuYasha looked uncomfortable and awkward at her side. Kagome reached out and lifted her absolute favourite.

InuYasha was actually smiling – they had gone to the cherry blossom festival in her time together. After a few games that involved him beating Souta (which had made the hanyou cackle loudly each time), she had begged for a photo before the night ended. The girl wanted to immortalize such a wonderful night with her first love. But when he asked why, she had tried to nonchalantly say it was a futuristic thing. The girl paused and continued to regard the picture nostalgically.

'Keh. If its so important to you than fine.' He had grumbled with a blush.

A soft smile appeared on her face. He had gone along with her request – an oddity for the usually oppositional boy. Kagome felt her heart pang as she continued to look at the picture. Her eyes focused on InuYasha. The hanyou stood beside her in his fire rat hoari as she wore a traditional kimono. He looked so handsome and relaxed. It almost seemed like they were a couple. Kagome felt her heart twist at that thought. Almost. It always seemed to be a prevalent thing between them this "almost" thing. A frown pulled at her lips at that thought and she gently placed the frame back down, her gaze darkening from a mixture of sadness and thoughtfulness.

'Could have, should have and would have. Is that what will always be what ties InuYasha and I together?' The miko wondered.

The girl's frown deepened. She had assumed that when everything was finished, she and InuYasha would actually become a couple. Yet here they were almost five months after the shikon no tama had been destroyed and his nemesis rid of and still hadn’t even kissed. Kagome's slender brows knitted together as she mused over the lack of growth between her and her love interest. It wasn’t for any lack on her part that they were still in this limbo. She had always known InuYasha was not the most forward person about his feelings; he also lacked in the romance department. So she had taken it upon herself to initiate the transition from friends with crushes to partners. The miko sighed, her blue eyes dulling with the sadness that plagued her.

But it seemed to not be going anywhere.

InuYasha continued to seem oblivious to her feelings and his own. He would busy himself with killing off any demon that came near the village, no matter how weak or unhazardous they were. Every time they spent time alone, he would seem nervous or stiff. It was like there was a wall between them and no matter how many times she tried to break through it to him, he seemed to reinforce the barrier between them and withdrew more from her. With a shake of her head, the miko drew back from the mirror and looked at her overloaded yellow bag in the corner of her room. It was stuffed to the brim with gifts for her friends and numerous boxes of ramen for the hanyou. It would be better to just go and stop mulling over her pathetic love life.

Kagme smiled sardonically to herself. Her worries and confusion about her relationship with InuYasha, or lack of one, was a real downer. She was getting tired and stressed about it. It was no good for her. Trying to reclaim some of her previous energy, the priestess shoved the troubling thoughts away and turned away from the wardrobe with its pictures.

‘Well I better get going. InuYasha will be even grumpier if I’m late. No use sitting around here depressing myself.' She reasoned wearily.

Her bag was on her back in no time and she descended down the stairs. Her grandfather, mother and Souta sat in the kitchen. Souta instantly perked up when he saw his sister enter.

His brown eyes beseeching, the teenage boy said, “Oi, you’re not leaving already are you, Kagome-nee-san?”

Kagome glanced at her brother and instantly saw why he was looking for a distraction. Their Jii-chan had obviously forced him into Shinto priest clothes, numerous scrolls and books piled around him on the table before him as the elder sat beside him, watching his every movement with a beady stare. The miko sweat dropped. Souta had been able to put off their grandparent’s zealous attempts to tutor him to become the next caretaker of the Higurashi shrine for the last few years but apparently, the elder had finally managed to shackle him down.

The girl couldn’t stop the small smile that stretched on her lips. She couldn’t help but wonder what kind of black mail her jii-chan had used.

At least he isn’t tied up to the chair this time.’ Kagome mused to herself.

A sympathetic look on her face, she nodded. “Hai. It’s time for me to go back.”

Souta scowled. “What’s the big deal? It’s not like you guys have anything to actually do anymore. You killed that Naraku guy, didn’t you?” He demanded.

Kagome flushed. Looking at her suddenly quiet family, the miko stood there awkwardly. What Souta said was true. There was no real purpose for her to go back to the Sengoku Jidai for the last few months. Her mission was over and her obligations dealt with. Her blush deepened. She didn’t want to admit it but she went back for InuYasha. She held onto the hope that her teenage dream would come true. A soft cough gained all their attention.

Mrs. Higurashi gave her anxious daughter a gentle smile. “Have a good time, dear. We’ll be waiting for you.”

Kagome visibly relaxed. She gave her mother a grateful look. “Arigatou, Mama.” She turned to the pouting Souta. “I’ll be back soon, Souta.”

Souta rolled his eyes. He eyed her apparel with obvious suspicion. “Not if you go back there and get married.” He muttered.

Jii-chan stiffened. He had been minding his own business until the topic of his granddaughter getting married arose. His eyes widening then narrowing angrily, the elder whipped to glare accusingly at his glaring granddaughter.

“Eh?! Kagome are you engaged?!” The elder demanded incredulously.

Kagome felt her face burn as she avoided her grandfather and chose to glare at the watching Souta. “N-No jii-chan! I’m going back to see my friends-“

“By friends, you mean InuYasha.” Souta interrupted slyly.

Jii-chan snorted. His wrinkled lips pursing, he shook his head wearily. “InuYasha is not the man for Kagome. She will never marry him.” He stated firmly.

Kagome’s hands fisted at her sides. Glaring at the two men of her family, she glowered at them dangerously, her reiki filling the kitchen. Mrs. Higurashi watched calmly from the side, quietly washing the dishes yet alert. She had suspected a lot of this already. She knew her daughter loved InuYasha but for some reason, the two still hadn’t become official. She glanced from the corner of her eye at her stiff daughter.

Kagome bit out angrily, “And what do you mean by that, jii-chan? There’s nothing wrong with InuYasha! He is strong, brave and kind. I don’t care if he is hanyou.”

Jii-chan regarded the girl calmly. “He is not for you, Kagome. We elder priests know these types of things.” He huffed. His lips thinning, he frowned at the futuristic miko. “Your auras do not blend. Besides, the boy is loud, overbearing and immature.”

“Reminds me of somebody else I know.” Kagome muttered.

Her grandfather scowled. “I am seventy three years old. I have the right to be.” He snapped.

Kagome rolled her eyes. “InuYasha is two hundred and fifty three. So if that’s your excuse, then he is allowed to be as well.” She quipped back.

Jii-chan sputtered furiously, “What kind of cradle-robbing…”

“Otou-san, are you not supposed to be cleansing the shrine with Souta-kun today?” Mrs. Higurashi suddenly interrupted, her smile pleasant but cool.

The man and teenage boy froze. Mrs. Higurashi appeared perfectly fine but there was a warning in her usually warm brown eyes. Stiffly, the pair rose and, muttering to each other about what kind of perverted old man InuYasha was between them, they left. Kagome deflated but still felt the defensive anger inside of her continue to boil. InuYasha was technically older than her in human years but in demon, he was still an adolescent like her!

“Ignore them, Kagome-chan. They are simply taking their duties as the men of this household too seriously.” Her mother sighed behind her.

Kagome turned and looked at the older woman. Mrs. Higurashi offered a comforting grin and reached out and pulled her into a hug. The girl relaxed and hugged her back. Her mother’s hand gently patted her carefully groomed hair. The girl leaned her cheek against her mother’s shoulder and stared at the shrine grounds through the kitchen window. The well house called to her as if a beacon. Her feet were itching to go back. Her heart was nervously fluttering at the idea she was going back to InuYasha.

Mrs. Higurashi drew back and held her daughter’s nervous cerulean gaze. “Kagome, I don’t think I’ve ever talked to you about love or men. You’ve always been so busy and dedicated to your mission in the past, I never worried about boys.” She began. Her smile wavered a bit. “But you are a woman now and it’s inevitable that you are going to want to love and be loved.”

Kagome blushed and looked away from her mother’s all-knowing stare. “It’s not like that. I’m not ready any ways.” She lied.

The woman smiled knowingly. Cupping her daughter’s cheek, she drew her attention back to her. Seeing the nervousness and hopefulness in her daughter’s eyes, Mrs. Higurashi felt her heart constrict. Her little Kagome-chan had grown up and was now a woman. She no longer needed her mother to hold her when she cried, or needed her to hold her when she fell or was hurt or wanted her to protect her. She had stopped all that when she had started going to the Sengoku Jidai. Kagome had outgrown her dependence on her family; she was a woman.

And now her daughter was now ready to find someone else to do that for her.

“It is okay, Kagome. It’s the natural progression we all make. We all want someone to love us and to have someone to love. To have a person who you can share everything with and have a future with… it’s something we all want eventually.” Mrs. Higurashi paused, her pretty face a mixture of pain and love. “I loved your Father very much. Even though we had planned on being together for the rest of our lives, Fate had other plans. But even though it hurt to lose him and to be left here without him, I never regret meeting him or loving him. He gave me two reasons to continue living and two people to love for the rest of my life. You and Souta are the pieces of him he left for me and now, you are ready to find your own love story. I hope yours will have a full story with a happy ending.”

Kagome didn’t notice that tears had welled up in her eyes. Or that they had begun to fall. She wrapped her arms around her mother and whispered, “Arigatou, Momma.”

Mrs. Higurashi sighed and gently squeezed her back. “Whatever you choose, know that we will support and love you no matter what.”

Kagome nodded, her face wet. “H-hai.”

Sniffling, she drew away from her mother and turned to leave. Her hand grasped the door knob yet she stalled. She glanced over her shoulder at her watching mother. Her mother’s eyes said it all. She knew Kagome was intending on finding her future in the past. That she hoped to find love and a life there. Which would mean her home would not be somewhere they could visit her. The well only worked for her and InuYasha. And even then, the well had a funny way of randomly not working. Kaede had suggested perhaps with the jewel gone, the magic was dissipating from it and it might eventually stop working.

Looking one last time at her mother, she gave a small smile at the watching woman. “I’ll be back soon, Momma. I promise.”

Mrs. Higurashi nodded. “We’ll be waiting.” She said with feeling.

Kagome hesitated for a moment and then forced herself out the door. Walking across the grounds, she entered the well house and shut the door behind her. She stood by the well and looked down it. She felt like she was going home. It was weird. Sometimes, she felt she had been born in the wrong time period. It was a strange sense of rightness every time she went back to the Sengoku Jidai. Her eyelids lowered, her face serious. She felt some shame and guilt every time she left. She had missed the years of Souta growing up, numerous family moments and she knew her mother wanted her home. They all did.

But she wasn’t meant for this time.

Sighing, she grasped the well lip and jumped down. The blue light enveloped her and the nostalgic feeling of passing through time instantly eased her. Her feet touched the bottom of the well. Kagome craned her neck back and looked up at the dark, stormy sky of the past. It was raining. Her hand reached to her bag and unlatched the umbrella she always kept there. The weather of the past and future were not in sync. She never knew what it was going to be on either side.

She quickly crawled up despite the heavy toll of her bag. Swinging her legs over the side, the girl clicked open the umbrella, blocking the heavy-falling rain. The miko quickly inspected her outfit. Luckily it was not ruined. She didn’t want to put in all the work she had to look good for it to melt away in the rain. Her sapphire gaze rose and looked around the field eagerly. InuYasha should be waiting for her. She wanted to see his face when he saw her.

Yet no crimson figure was there. No silver haired hanyou was stomping towards her grumpily, accusing her of taking too long. The field was empty and barren. The miko stood there, holding her umbrella shakily, a cold feeling hitting her. Her stomach felt like it was sinking. Her brows furrowing, she looked around almost desperately. Where was he? He couldn’t still be mad that she gone home for a few weeks? Kagome’s shoulders drooped, her expression becoming blank.

He used to always wait for her whenever she went home. Lately, he had stopped. He never came to her time either to see her. Kagome stared at the empty forest, her heart constricting in her chest. Sniffling, she forced away the feeling and tried to calm herself. Maybe he was underneath a tree or something so he wouldn’t get wet in the rain. But then again, he never had cared about that stuff. InuYasha wasn’t a frilly boy. He was more savage than the typical guy. Even for a guy five hundred years in the past.

“InuYasha! I’m back! Just like I promised!” She yelled, her voice hopeful.

Silence was her answer. No shout or expletive curses boomed in the air. Only the soft patter of the countless droplets continued to sound in the empty clearing. The miko scrutinized her surroundings hopefully, waiting to see the hanyou appear as he usually did. Yet as the minutes passed and no silver-hair boy stomped into her vision, her stomach fell. He wasn’t here. He hadn’t come. Kagome stared down at her feet, bowing her head so that her bangs covered her swiftly tearing eyes. Her hand shook on the handle of her umbrella. Why wasn’t he here? Why is it he seemed to be getting more distant lately? Did he actually not care about her?

Her shoulders trembled.

‘InuYasha… what’s happening? What’s wrong? Did I do something? Or are you still in pain over Kikyou? Is there something wrong with me?’

He wasn’t there for her to ask those questions. But they struck her heart like sharp blows. Tears dripping, the miko felt like crying. Her mouth trembling as the sobs she wanted to let loose bubbled in her tight-feeling throat, she sat on the well lip, casting her umbrella on the ground. She lowered her head and softly cried. What was the point? There was none. She was so stupid. For months the evidence had pointed at the fact InuYasha did not feel the same about her as she him. He just didn’t have the courage to tell her.

Her hands curled on the well lip, her nails that she had carefully painted digging into the aged wood. Her body shook as she started to become drenched. But she didn’t care. Physical pain was nothing compared to what was happening in her heart.

“Do all ningen lack self-preservation?” A deep voice cut into her pity session.

Kagome stiffened. Quickly looking up, she saw the demon Lord, Sesshoumaru, a few feet from her. His cold gold stare looked at her mockingly, his pale face seeming to glow in the dark of the storm. The miko froze. What was Sesshoumaru doing here? And why was he talking to her? She hadn’t heard or sensed him – it was as alarming as it was scary. He really was a super youkai like Myouga had said. Her body rigid, she warily sat back further on the well lip. If something happened, she had a chance to just fall backward back to the future. She eyed the demon Lord with evident confusion.

Sesshoumaru never spoke to her. Since they had defeated Naraku, the only time she saw him was when he visited Rin. And even then he didn’t converse with anyone else other than the child. Yet here he was, talking to her and of course, he had made a cryptic remark. Her eyes narrowed.

“What do you mean by that?” She replied sourly.

The demon Lord peered back at her blankly. “Humans are prone to illness. Yet you sit in the elements without a care.” He explained like one would to an idiot. He arched a brow at the small ningen. “I am merely curious if you are slow or if this is a common ningen idiocy.”

Kagome gaped at the demon Lord. Her face quickly burning with anger, she glowered at the inu youkai and snapped, “You know for someone who doesn’t talk much, the few times you do it’s not a pleasant experience.”

The inu youkai stared back at her coldly. “I only state the truth, girl.”

Kagome huffed. “Well if that’s the case, why are you here? Aren’t you here to visit Rin-chan?”

The dog demon ignored the question. Instead, he tilted his head to the side. Kagome fidgeted under the direct onslaught of his golden glare. Staring at him, confused, she reviewed the demon Lord. The few times she had been this close to him he had tried to kill her. Or had saved her which was a more recent occurrence before Naraku had died. But that had been the limit of their interaction. He’d always been InuYasha’s hated half-brother to her. The guy who had wanted to kill the hanyou, steal his Tetsusaiga or humiliate his younger brother.

The few times they had spoken were more her yelling at him as she tried to interfere with their sibling rivalry. But that was the extent of their acquaintance. Now as he stood before her, the miko regarded him more closely. He was getting soaked in the rain as was she but he wasn’t at all affected. His white-silver hair shone in the fog, his pale skin seeming to shimmer with an otherworldly beauty. He wore his traditional outfit; armour, white and red hoari and hakama with his patterned obi. His swords, the three of them to be specific, were strapped to his hip as they usually were.

Kagome frowned. It was weird seeing Sesshoumaru this close up without a sword or claw being drawn and pointed at her. He simply stood there regarding her as she was him. She noticed then he was glancing her up and down. She blushed. Her dress was being soaked, her garments becoming transparent. Self-consciously, she grabbed the front of her cardigan and held it closed modestly. She really didn’t want to explain why she wore such weird undergarments to the perceptive demon.

Suddenly, he stepped forward. The girl stiffened and slid back a bit more, her butt hanging off the well lip into the darkness behind her, intending to make her escape quickly if he continued to act weird. He stopped a foot from her. Kagome trembled as his immense youki pressed down on her. Her body shaking, she looked up at the tall demon before her, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.

“Don’t get any closer. What’s up with you? Are you sick or something?” She asked, her tone alarmed.

The demon Lord’s eyes narrowed. His elfin features emotionless, his glare was chilling.

“Yes.” He responded, his timbre voice cool and emotionless.

Kagome’s brows flew up. She quickly observed his heavenly appearance. He didn’t look sick at all. Her brows lowered as she glowered at him.

“You don’t look sick.” She retorted sceptically.

The dog demon sniffed derisively. His head craning up, he peered down at her from his elegant nose.

“It is not an illness a human would comprehend.” He rebutted evasively.

Kagome frowned. Licking her lips nervously, she shivered as the cold wet rain that seeped through her clothing began to affect her. Perhaps she shouldn’t have thrown away her umbrella. Her eyes darted to the side quickly, looking for InuYasha. He should have sensed Sesshoumaru by now. He would be able to tell he was here with her. Surely he would come now wouldn’t he?

“The hanyou is not here.” Sesshoumaru’s deep voice cut into her hopeful thoughts.

The miko looked at the daiyoukai, stunned. It was like he could read her thoughts. His empty stare met hers. Her face flushing, she looked away from him, scowling.

“He will come for me soon and he won’t like you talking to me.” She announced stiffly.

The demon Lord hummed sceptically. His golden orbs slanting, his eyelids dropped over his frozen stare, his crimson markings like blood against his porcelain skin. He tilted his head ever so slightly, regarding her like she was a simpleton. The miko scowled at him.

“What do you want? If I can’t help you with your sickness since apparently humans can’t “understand it”, why are you here?” The girl demanded.

The inu youkai blinked languidly. The rain dripped down him almost lovingly, his gorgeous features sinfully delicious when wet. Kagome shifted uneasily on the well. She stiffened when he suddenly disappeared. Looking around her, hoping the demon had grown bored of their strained conversation, she screamed when something snared her upper left arm and pulled her roughly to the side. She yelped when she felt herself thrown on the ground. Kagome lay there for a moment in the mud. Her body shook from shock. Her dress… all her hard work… was ruined. Trembling with rage, she glared over her shoulder at the inu youkai who now stood over her like a deadly angel, his flawless face blank like a piece of fresh parchment. Not a hair was out of place to suggest he had moved at all. She certainly hadn’t seen him move. Her teeth gritted together.

But there was no denying the jerk had tossed her into the puddle. She stood up in a flurry of mud and water, her soaked face pulled into an impressive snarl. She jabbed her finger at him, pushing her soaking hair out of her face with her other hand.

“What do you think you’re doing? How dare you-“

She never finished the sentence. His large hand shot out and wrapped around her neck. With no effort on his part, Sesshoumaru lifted her effortlessly in the air well above his head. Kagome instantly struggled. Her feet kicked out at him desperately. All the while he watched her fight for air apathetically, his hand tightening on her throat viciously. Her hands grabbed at his wrist and began scratching at it viciously. He ignored the blunt scraping of her pathetic nails. His honey-coloured orbs frozen like an arctic tundra, he stared up at the human above him impassively.

Sesshoumaru watched the girl’s sad attempts at escape with barely concealed disgust. He had come here with a purpose. He would kill this wench. Seeing the life quickly evaporating from her wide blue eyes, her face darkening as he cut off her supply of oxygen, the demon Lord watched disinterestedly as death began to take its toll on the human priestess. For months this girl had been a plague on him. He had bided his time, waiting for the right moment to strike down this ulcer-causing human before it was too late. Her feet tried to strike him but to no avail. He almost found it amusing how pathetic the girl was. Yet it was because of how pathetic and unworthy she was he had to kill her.

“S-Stop... let… go…” She choked pleadingly.

“Shut up and die ningen.” Sesshoumaru ordered calmly, his perfect face indifferent.

Kagome stared down at the demon. Her vision was darkening. Yet those haunting gold eyes of his probed hers. He wanted to watch her die. It was obvious he had murder on his mind. Kagome struggled weakly. Her body was becoming heavy. Her movements were becoming harder to muster and her head felt ready to explode. Even the sound of the rain was fading away. She felt her body going limp. She was going to die. And for what? What had she done?

She hadn’t spoken to Sesshoumaru in months. They barely saw one another. But now all of the sudden he was here killing her. She should have just jumped into the well. But she had stupidly waited out this meeting, hoping to see InuYasha come bounding from the treeline as he used to. He used to protect her. He used to become jealous if a guy even looked at her. But Sesshoumaru had said he wasn’t even here. Where was he? He had known she was coming back today.

Why wasn’t he here then?

Tears leaked from her eyes and with that, she stopped fighting her inevitable death by Sesshoumaru's hand. It hurt. It hurt so much in her heart. Three years of wasted hopes and dreams. She was never going to get her happily ever after. Maybe she should have known it wasn’t in her cards. Things never did work out for her after all. Higurashi Kagome had always been a cursed soul; she had an uncanny ability at finding danger and bad luck. The darkness overtaking her vision, her body going still, the miko felt death’s cold embrace tighten on her.

She was dying. She knew it. But she couldn’t find the strength to save herself. Her reiki was not reacting to her will for some reason. Why couldn’t she purify Sesshoumaru? After three years, she had a reasonable control of her immense power. It still wasn’t anywhere close to perfect but it was a good enough development that she had felt proud of herself. But now it failed her. All those years and unfounded pride in her abilities had quickly evaporated when this dog demon had decided to kill her.

It was so effortless for him it was shameful.

Momma… I’m sorry. I guess I’m not coming back. But then again, I think we both knew that. I just didn’t know it was going to be because I died.’ She thought with guilt.

Suddenly, he let go of her. Kagome crumpled to the ground. Landing in the puddle before the well, she lay there, gasping and choking. The air rushed into her burning lungs causing her to whimper in pain. O Kami it hurt! It hurt to breath. It actually hurt to be alive right now. After coming so close to death it had been an almost welcomed numbness. Her vision doubling, she tried to move to crawl away from the demon. She didn’t want to give him the chance to finish what he had started.

But her attempts were soon proven useless. Sesshoumaru knelt beside her, grabbing her by the back of her dress. She tried to scream but her throat was raw. She managed a small squeak as he flipped her onto her back, exposing her soaked front. The girl looked up at the dog demon and froze. Blood red eyes peered down at her instead of cold, logical gold. His face markings seemed to be like spilt ink as they bleed across his skin in jagged lines. Her eyes widened in horror at the terrifying picture. Sesshoumaru’s youki was unleashed. Those predatory red orbs of his with their slit for a pupil held her horrified sapphire pair.

“N-no… please…” She whispered, her throat too sore to manage anything above that.

The daiyoukai ignored her pleas and reached out. She shivered, tears falling from her terrified gaze as he grabbed the front of her dress and dragged her up to meet him. His fangs were exposed as they lengthened to the point they crept from the confines of his mouth, their white tips glinting in the dark. The miko’s chest heaved as she began to hyperventilate. Her heart was hammering against her chest, threatening to burst out of it. He was even scarier like this.

Her mind exploded when the most unimaginable thing then happened.

In a swift, smooth movement, the daiyoukai leaned down and caught her blue-tinged lips with his own. Her body went still. She stared into his blood-red stare as he kissed her. His pale lips held hers possessively, their touch surprisingly hot and electrifying. She could feel the energy passing from him to her to the tips of her fingers and toes. The odd sensation vibrated through her. Her body reacted of its own accord. Her nipples tightened painfully, her body quaking like it was being electrocuted.

Her arms still felt heavy yet somehow she managed to raise them. She put her palms on his chest and tried to push him off her. He growled as she tried to remove him off her, the sound feral. His arm snaked around her and crushed her to him. Thunder boomed above as lightning streaked across the sky as the miko felt the demon Lord’s hand let go of her front and run down her side, grasping her thigh hard enough for his talons to pierce the soft skin.

She whimpered against his mouth that continued to hold hers. His lips moved against hers, trying to pry open her mouth. She tried to shake him off of her but he held fast on. His mouth finally opened hers and his tongue entered greedily. It ran along the insides of her mouth like it was trying to possess every nook and cranny it had. Kagome felt as if she was in a nightmare. One moment he was in the process of murdering her and now he was kissing her senseless?

‘What the fuck?! InuYasha get your ass here and save me from you psychotic brother now!’ She screamed inside.

The large hand that held her thigh loosened and then moved around to her back to cup her generous bottom underneath her soaked and dirtied dress. The futuristic girl stiffened. O Kami it was getting worse! Was he going to rape her before he killed her? How sick was this bastard?! The vibrations of his growls passed through his chest into hers, causing a delicious yet confusing tingling in her aroused nipples. The miko’s head swam in the fog of confusion and fear. Her body went still when he then softened his kiss, his hand squeezing the cheek it held, and lifted his face from hers. She stared into his predatory stare mutely.

A small, deadly smirk appeared on his lips.

“Konochi wa, Kagome.” He murmured.

Kagome felt her mind stall. Her mouth fell open. He knew her name? Since when? He only ever referred to her as miko or ningen. What in the name of the kami was happening here? Had she actually died and was now in some sort of twisted limbo or even Hell?

The daiyoukai raised a single brow, his crimson orbs holding her terrified pair like magnets with pins.

“Do not worry, girl. I will not harm you.” He purred. His smirk widened the slightest but it made her blood run cold. “At least, not in the way my other half plans too.”

Kagome listened to the demon Lord’s insane ramblings. The only logical reason she could think of made her freeze. Sesshoumaru had a split personality disorder. He had to get some medication or something. He wasn’t lying when he said he was sick. The bastard was a psychotic murderer with a Jekyll-Hyde complex. She went rigid when his arm that wrapped around her pulled her against him, as if cradling her like a possession won. The miko tried to look around her. Someone had to have come by now. Her friends, InuYasha, a random vigilante… Hell even Naraku reborn would be a blessing at this point.

The girl almost screamed when she felt the inu youkai then nuzzle his cheek against hers, purring. She did at this point begin to hyperventilate. He was going to eventually go back to his normal, gold-eyed self and resume killing her. She had to get away before that happened. But she couldn’t fathom how. Kagome instantly screamed when he stood fluidly, lifting her with him. She was almost cemented to his chest. Her body weak and tired, the girl still tried to fight her way out of his hold.

Her fists pummeled anything she could reach of him, her legs kicking in the air valiantly.

“Let me go you crazy asshole! What do you think you’re doing?! First you try and kill me and then you molest me?! You need some serious help!” She yelled hoarsely, her throat throbbing painfully.

The daiyoukai glanced down at her. Those burning eyes of his quelled her shouting effortlessly. His head tilted upwards arrogantly.

“Is that how you thank the one who saves you, girl?” He demanded monotonously as he started walking.

Kagome shivered. Meeting his displeased glare, she glowered at him. “You didn’t save me, you hallucinating idiot. You are the one who just tried to kill me then molested me. The only thanks you’re going to get is being burnt to a crisp!” She hissed.

The youkai watched the girl in his hold glare at him from beneath her wet bangs. She looked like a drowned kitten. Her sapphire eyes sparkled with rage, her small form trembling from the cold and his other half’s recent murder attempt. A deep rage inside him boiled. He had known the fool was going to try and rid of the girl before he could claim her. He shared a mind with the demon Lord. There was nothing he could hide from him.

His bloody orbs slanted. Luckily he had interfered in time. It had been a daunting task trying to overtake Sesshoumaru’s body against his will but he had managed. Feeling the girl in his hold continue to try and squirm away, he looked around the clearing sharply. He had to leave this place before anyone else interfered. He had waited too long to have it all go down the drain. He raised his nose and sniffed mutely. He had marked a place before for this situation.

He found the marker easily enough even though it was more than several kilometers away. His pale face stony, the inu youkai sped forward. The miko screamed as she felt the world begin to fly by as the daiyoukai streaked through the forest like a bullet, elegantly avoiding bushes, tree limbs and whatever else in his path. Her hands grabbed onto his armour, avoiding the spikes. She was terrified he was going to throw her to the side. She would make a really gross splatter at this speed against a tree.

“H-hey just let me go and I’ll go to the village. It’ll be like nothing ever happened. I won’t mention it and I promise I’ll never talk to you again!” She pleaded over the roar of the whipping air.

He ignored her ramblings. Nothing was going to dissuade him. Within moments he was outside the cave he had planned to use for this moment. He entered it in a white blur. The girl in his arms stiffened and then began cursing loudly, shouting pathetically as her throat was raw from his other half’s brutal attack. If it was possible he would kill Sesshoumaru for his attempt of murdering the girl. But if the demon Lord died so did he. He walked forward, disregarding her flailing limbs, and deposited her on the dry dirt ground. The miko instantly tried to back away but he caught her by her leg and dragged her back.

She whimpered fearfully and tried to kick him with her other foot. He caught her small ankle and snared it in a steel-like grip. She paused her struggles and stared at him with undulated terror. Her chest heaved as she panted, her lips parted as she shakily breathed in and out. He ran his gaze over her small form, pleased by what he saw. Her odd garment was soaked, exposing her curves that were bountiful. Her breasts were generous and perk, her waist small and then flowing out into round hips and thick thighs. Her long dark hair hung down to her waist, the soaked tresses clinging to her.

Even dirty, scared and soaked she was a sight to be seen.

One that he intended on enjoying by more than just looking. With that thought, he pulled her beneath him with a tug. She yelped when he settled on top of her, pinning her into the ground. She squirmed but his weight was enough to hold her like a boulder on a piece of paper. Kagome swallowed over the lump in her throat as she looked up at the demon who sat on her. His burning red orbs peered down at her, his flawless features scary as he smirked down at her mockingly. She watched him then raise his hand and with a few tugs and twists, his armour was loosened and thrown to the side with a loud thud.

Her eyes became wider as each article was cast away. Soon he sat on her in just his underhoari and hakama. The miko gulped when she saw his hoari was opened, exposing the broad, pale expanse of his chest. Kami, it was a pity he was so crazy. He was truly a sexy beast. The girl froze when she then felt the cool air all over her. Confused, she looked down and stared in shock at her suddenly bared front. She didn't know when he had managed it but he had cut her dress from the top all the way down, revealing her underwear. Kagome gaped for a moment before she started screaming.

"You pervert! You really are a twisted, sick bastard!" She sputtered furiously.

The demon hummed. He leaned forward, his silver-white hair pooling around them, blocking out their surroundings. Trapped under him, she was forced to watch his face loom closer, his blood-like stare burning uncharacterstically.

"Stop struggling." He commanded.

Kagome paused. Seeing her own terrified face reflected in his wild stare, Kagome felt herself unable to breathe. She stared into those bright eyes, wishing they were inanimate as they had been before when he seemed to hate her, her mouth suddenly dry and her throat parched. She almost wished he had killed her back in the clearing.

Looking at him furiously, she said stiffly, "Stop molesting me and let me go."

The demon's eyes slanted. His slitted pupils running along her features, she cringed when he said down to her coolly, "You are foolish to think you are in the position to tell this one what to do."

Kagome flinched. He was right. Her reiki was somehow dormant at this moment and he was the one with the super strength and senses. Her threats were void and they both knew it. She shivered as he then cupped her chin, forcing her head back to expose her neck. She shivered, tears already gathering in her terrified gaze as she was forced to look up at the cave ceiling. She felt him then inhale close to her neck. She shivered as he continued to quietly sniff at the point where her blood pulsed visibly in the smooth column. Her mouth dropped open when then something hot and slightly rough ran along her neck. Her body reacted by shaking violently, an odd sound she had never made coming from her bruised lips.

The demon heard the erotic sound and felt the erection in his hakama swell painfully. It had been months of planning for this moment. He was sorely tempted to claim her. To ravage her body and to feel her sheath around him. But he had a plan to abide by. Also, he could sense his other half's growing rage at his antics. Sesshoumaru would eventually reclaim his body and attempt to kill the girl. If he claimed her now, he was willing to bet the bastard would kill her and himself out of disgust and shame. He could not let that happen. So he would simply test the object of his desire's charms.

His hand trailing down her side, feeling her quiver as his large palm cupped her right breast and squeezed it experimentally, he looked into her wet sapphire orbs.

"Are you scared?" He asked, his smirk a bit morbid.

The miko instantly shook her head defiantly. She would never give up. She would not admit that she was close to shitting herself at that moment. That looking into his insane eyes made her want to scream, cry and faint all at once.

"No-"

"Liar." He cut in smoothly. His body pressing more into her, letting her feel his erection in the juncture between her legs, he murmured, "It is useless to try and deceive me."

The tiny, lush body strained and pulled from him, causing excited jolts of heat and desire to flood through his entire being. He felt himself becoming more aroused with her resistance. The smell of the miko, the sweetness of her mouth, the addictive feel of her soft, curved body against his own lean, muscled frame was intoxicating. Her body was full in the places it should be - she was a fully matured female made for copulation and breeding. Why Sesshoumaru was so opposed to mating with the miko was lost to him. The demon Lord had never found a female more suitable than this one. Ningen or not, she was the appropriate choice. He just had to make the choice a reality for the sake of both of them.

Feeling the tremors vibrating in her small body, he kissed the girl's neck, tasting the sweet flavour of her flesh. She had an addictive scent and taste. He could not wait to fully explore all the delights her body had to offer. Kagome felt her head spinning and her vision doubling as foreign sensations erupted inside her. His mouth was hot and skilled; it was a delicious torment that confused and aroused her in a bewildering mixture. She renewed her struggles. She could not just let him take her virginity so easily. Even if he was a skilled seducer. He had just tried to kill her and was now intent on raping her!

The demon continued to trail his lips down her neck to her chest. He stopped to look at the odd contraption holding her breasts. His glare narrowed. While it was an interesting and visually pleasing piece of fabric, he did not like its purpose. To cover the girl's charms from his perusal warranted destruction. With a flick of his hand, he cut it away with his long talons easily. It fell open and revealed her chest. Her breasts were round and creamy; the aerolas puckered and a soft pink. His mouth longed to suckle and nibble the entire expanse of them.

Kagome began to cry at that moment. From the recent near death to now the impending rape, it was all going by much too fast for her. And the fact InuYasha and her friends still hadn't noticed her dilemma was another blow to the girl. She crumbled into a crying mess underneath the demon. Her small body shook with each cry, her tears glistening on her creamy skin. The demon drew back and watched. Her cries frustrated him. He did not want her tears; he wanted her lust. Her expression should be one of desire not pain. This was not going according to his plan anymore. His plan had never involved her shutting down and laying there like a martyr.

"I hate you. I hate InuYasha. You inu youkai... you're all assholes." She cried softly, her watery blue eyes holding his burning pair.

He regarded her stonily. The girl then looked away, her small face sombre. "Do whatever you want Sesshoumaru. It's obvious I can't stop you. And no one is going to come save me... I can't even help myself." She said woodenly.

The youkai scrutinized the girl. Her submission should have pleased him. But it didn't. It bothered him how disengaged she was now. Growling, he sat up and settled beside her. The miko froze in shock. Suddenly, a piece of cloth was placed over her nearly naked body. Clad in only her stockings and underwear, it was an understatment that she was cold. Kagome hesitantly sat up. The demon sat beside her rigidly, his red eyes trained towards the entrance. The rain poured as lightning streaked outside. The girl cautiously gathered the material and scuttled away from him. Her back to the cave wall, she eyed him warily.

Why had he stopped? Was he going to let her go? Was his insanity finally over?

She stiffened when he then glanced at her from the corner of one red eye. "My name is not Sesshoumaru." He announced, his deep voice firm with conviction.

Kagome froze. The pair stared at one another in strained silence. She gaped at the daiyoukai who continued to stare at her calmly as if he had not just declared being crazy. Licking her full lips nervously, she regarded the demon cautiously.

"What are you talking about? You are Sesshoumaru. You are InuYasha's half-brother. The daiyoukai of the West." She said slowly, trying to clear away some of his confusion.

Kagome almost pitied the demon. He sounded so sure of what he was saying. Like he truly believed he was someone else. The girl mentally scoffed to herself. She could not sympathize with the guy who had nearly killed her, kidnapped her and almost raped her. But then again mental illness was not a funny subject. Her mind whirling, she jumped when she heard a deep snarl from the demon. She paled as she watched him glower at her.

His upper lip curling, the demon Lord replied in steely tone, "I am Yorumaru - the youki of Sesshoumaru."

Kagome blinked slowly. So that's how demons in the past rationalized split personality disorder? It was like how people in this time period thought the kami decided when you died or if a storm happened. She could try and impart some of her futuristic knowledge onto him and give the confused demon Lord his proper diagnosis but thought against it. It was probably best to not push him too far. She pulled his hoari around her self-consciously, watching him nervously from her corner.

'He's nuttier than squirrel poop.' The miko despaired to herself.

In most hostage situations with a crazy psychopath, the victim usually didn't live. She swallowed nervously. She had to distract him from anymore murderous thoughts until someone came to save her. She couldn't give up hope that somebody was eventually going to notice her capture and start looking for her. Now the whole notion they may actually find her was stretching it a bit but a girl had to hope. Plan decided, the girl nodded at the demon Lord as if accepting his answer.

"Okay... so... why are you doing this then, Yorumaru?" She asked.

She would play along for now. It was a good time waster to have him talking. At least it distracted him from molesting or killing her. She watched the demon sniff arrogantly.

"I have chosen you. You are the most suitable female for us." He claimed in a matter-of-fact tone, his expression haughty.

Kagome scowled. "Well being the most "suitable" does not make me willing. Besides, its obvious "Sesshoumaru" doesn't agree with your choice."

Yorumaru cast her a dry look. "The whelp has no choice in this matter. As neither do you."

Kagome flushed. Standing up, she wrapped the hoari close around her. She stood over the watching daiyoukai like a riled kitten, her sparkling sapphire gaze spitting daggers at him.

"You know you are really selfish. You aren't even considering how Sesshoumaru or I feel about what you're doing." She snapped.

Yorumaru looked up at the human. She made an alluring sight in just his hoari with those weird leg coverings, her hair hanging around her loosely. Even dirt and tear streaked, she was a tempting beacon for him. He stood in an elegant movement, his over six foot three frame looming over her smaller form. The miko 'eeped' and backed away defensively. He watched her do so sourly. He did not like how this was progressing at all. He had planned that by now he would be between her legs at this point of her capture. Instead he was arguing with the minx and time was running out.

Sesshoumaru was quickly regaining control of their shared body. Yorumaru scowled. He would have to do something to ensure the girl didn't get killed while he was locked up by the demon Lord. He moved swiftly and pushed her against the wall. She screamed in surprise as he lifted her, forcing her legs apart so he could settle between them. Her fists instantly flew at him but he caught her dainty wrists and pinned them above her head. Her chest was bared again, the creamy mounds heaving with every shaky breath she took. Yorumaru looked over his female with appreciation. He had chosen well. Even if these two idiots were against his choice, they would eventually come to accept it.

His mouth moving closer to hers, he captured her lips with his once again, except this time their hold was more gentle. Kagome stilled. The odd, alien heat in her stomach flared to life again. His scent was strangely arousing. Although she was loath to admit it, the dog demon even in all his insanity and confusion, was a slice of seduction that any hot blooded woman could not refuse. His mouth trailed from hers, making its way down her chin and then to her neck.

Kagome moaned as a single hand then held her wrists, the other moving to cup her right breast, massaging the suddenly tender orb teasingly. Her body shook as his long fingers plucked at her aching nipple, causing her to gasp and moan. His mouth continued its descent to her neck as he then licked and nibbled. Her eyes glossy with desire, Kagome couldn't move for the life of her. Between his tender administrations and his hold on her body, escape was impossible. The sensations in her body consuming her, the girl stiffened and then screamed as a sharp pain flared in her neck.

Yorumaru bit down on the girl's throat, her metallic blood bursting into his mouth. Her reiki sizzled painfully on his tongue yet it only aroused him more. Feeling her squirm in pain as he marked her, he purred comfortingly in his chest, trying to placate the miko who now cried out in pain than desire. The red in his eyes beginning to regress, the demon mentally sighed. It was a necessary action. If he didn't, the bastard would kill the miko as soon as he returned to his position of control.

Yorumaru felt Sesshoumaru finally regain consciousness. Taking one last moment to run his tongue along her neck, ensuring the mark would heal and stay in place, the youkai retracted from the demon Lord's body and back into the deep recesses of his energy. Kagome shook as she felt the long, hot tongue run across the painful area on her throat, the feeling oddly sensual and reassuring as he licked the bite he had inflicted on her. Suddenly, she felt Sesshoumaru stiffen and then go still against her. The growl that had been sensual became feral causing the fine hairs on her body to stand up on end.

The demon then pulled back and Kagome felt her gut drop when she was met with the gold eyes of the daiyoukai. Her mouth opened to tell him off only to stop when she saw the bitter, dangerous fury in his currently rational glare. Those frozen gold pools of his were promising death onto her. His glare spoke volumes how this personality identity of his despised her. His pale face rigid, the demon's upper lip curled to expose his normal length fangs, his youki pulsing around him.

"You." He hissed, his deep voice dripping with venom and ill-concealed hatred.

Kagome gulped.

'U oh... I think murderous Sesshoumaru is back.'
