Seasonal Steal by LM Bluejay

As the sun made its final descent, old gothic lamp posts lit cobbled roads. A light snow began to fall as the wind picked up and temperature dropped. With the exception of a few roaming shoppers, most of the townsfolk had already left. A lot of stores had also shut down for the night making hiding all the more challenging.

His worst fears began to manifest as they stood awkwardly in open space. “This is bad,” Shippo bit his thumb. “We’re no better than sitting ducks.”

“Good. I’m tired of running.” Rin sat on the ground and dug through her bag.

“H-hey! What are you doing? We need to find a quick place to...”

“Hide? Shippo, I got this. Relax, will you?”

“No! There are bad guys out to get us! Like really bad. So bad… they’re men who work for M! M! Do you hear me!? And you’re just sitting there going through your purse!”

“Well if someone would’ve just paused for a second the situation could have already been handled. Besides,” she huffed, “I doubt anyone with name like that is scary.”

“Are you kidding me?” Shippo gripped his hair. “M is like the most dangerous person on in the country! Maybe even the whole galaxy!

Rin chuckled. “You’re so dramatic.”

“And you haven’t listened to word I’ve said. I overheard those guys say that M has a bounty on you.”

“And I’ve told you I’ve never heard of him.” Her eyes lit as she pulled out a silk. She secured the orange cloth around her face. Her eyes peeked through two slots. “So? What do you think?”

“We’re never gonna see the ripe old age of twenty? Rin, if we don’t move now…?”

“Hey, I found them!” A raspy voice bellowed. Their pursuers charged from around a corner.

Shippo cursed under his breath. “Now look what you… hey!” Rin suddenly pounced on his head. The next thing he knew she stood back and smiled. He felt the tickle of silk hit the back his neck. Apparently, she’d tied a piece of cloth on him as well. His instincts screamed to scratch it off. But before he got the chance they were already completely surrounded. Five men towered over them like skyscrapers, two of which were built like bulls. Shippo shook under their piercing gaze. I was supposed to be done in by jelly doughnuts!

Rin whispered, “Just follow my lead.” She sent Shippo a wink before facing the leader. She puffed out her chest and roared. “Hark, ye villains! Thou shall meet thy maker. Behold!” She struck a pose. “I am Easy Cheese Lass! And this is my trusty sidekick…”

Shippo shrugged. “Tostitos Mild…?”

“Bwaahaahahaha! You’ve got to be shitting me!” A green haired man wiped away a tear. “Are you two punks for real?”

“Maybe they think it’s still Halloween?”

“Well they didn’t put in much effort. I mean what’s the point of just wearing some lame masks?”

“Well, remember when I asked for your opinion? Me neither,” Rin sniffed.

“What was that?” the leader growled.

“Don’t you need a license to be that ugly?”

“Rin, stoppit!” Shippo cried. “Are you trying to get us killed!?”

“I told you. Follow my lead.”

The burly man cracked his knuckles and stepped forward. “Sounds like someone needs to be taught a lesson. Too bad for you I’m not afraid to punish a girl.”

Shippo took a defensive stance in front of Rin. “I-I’d say…your face is p-p-punishment enough. What, did someone’s ass go on holiday?”

“Kid, that’s strike three.” He raised his arm and swung down.

Shippo slammed his eyes shut as he waited for impact. Several seconds passed but it never came. Once he re-opened his eyes they grew. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Rin had stopped the large male’s fist with only the touch of a single finger. What. The. Hell.

“Way to go Shippo! I think that last one really did it.” Rin rushed the paralyzed man in the stomach sending him flying into a brick wall.

The remaining four thugs backed away.

Shippo stared at her in shock and amazement. “Hooow did you do that?”

Rin twirled a piece of her orange sash. “Uncle Inu calls them his Super Kick-Ass Scarves.”
