Musings About a Stranger

She sighed once more as their steps brought them farther away from the well than they had ever been before. This time, there was no possibility of retreating to the future if things went sour. Their strange yet united group would just have to grin and bear whatever came their way.

And, as fate would have it, Sesshoumaru came their way- alone. Kagome watched him constantly during the short encounter, her eyes boring into his back as he inevitably continued on his way. His seemingly aimless meanderings had caught her attention.

What a lonely existence he must lead, she thought; a solitary nomad who travelled over great distances and lived through many years. The miko couldn't really wrap her mind around it- this itinerant demon would outlive all of them by tens, if not hundreds of human lifetimes. He would see- had seen- rulers come and go, would witness the advancement of humanity and the rise of various forms of evil.

And he would remain unchanged by it all, a silent sentinel, watching the world evolve around him and yet, not be a part of it. Kagome could imagine him in her time, frozen, like a remnant of a bygone age. Time would never sully his perfection... nor would it grant him any other role than that which he currently played. That of the wanderer.

A sensation on her cheek caused the woman to raise a trembling hand to her face. Water trails met her questing fingers. Blinking furiously, she quietly cried for Sesshoumaru as she watched his bright form disappear into the forest.

She pitied his loneliness.
