Kagome had once described him as a paradox. She had said that on the surface, he appeared to be completely encased in thick ice that made it impossible to reach the man inside. She had also added not long afterwards, that she knew he had a passionate fire raging within, but that it was diminished... And that she would take great pleasure in stoking it into its former glory.

The inuyoukai had not heeded her words, convinced that they were nothing more than the sentimental ramblings of an ignorant human woman from the future. The miko had been an infuriating but useful companion; and he was shocked to find that when the jewel and the spider hanyou had been taken care of for good, she had suddenly seemed to be a more permanent fixture in his life than he had thought. Rin had refused to say goodbye, and much to his surprise, he hadn't wanted to either. So she had left her friends to settle down in their new lives, whilst she travelled with him, ridding the western lands of evil.

Watching her own bright fire had awakened something deep inside of him; what it was- the demon was not sure of, but he had found himself drawn to Kagome like a moth to a flame. It was something about her, something she did that made his lungs feel like an inferno was raging on every time he took a breath and that he had a volcano in his belly spreading molten magma through his veins. It was odd, but the paradoxical feeling that she had started- of being burned from the inside out- had never made him feel so alive.

It had come as a great surprise to everyone but her former companions and his ward; when the Western Lord announced his intention to take a human miko for his mate. Their ceremony had been beautiful and unusual- only close friends had been invited to attend, making many other nobles feel slighted. The actual mating had lasted many days, the time traveller being brought to the height of pleasure innumerable times, her partner always following her off the brink into mutual satisfaction. Her rule at his side brought unbelievable prosperity to the west, and all who had doubted her were now irrevocably convinced that their lord could not have chosen better had he searched the entire world.

Alas, her spark eventually died out, unable to be sustained by her failing and aged mortal body. Kagome left with a smile on her face, content with her life that had been filled with love.

Sesshoumaru mourned her passing as though the very sun had been blotted from the sky; and to him, it had. She was his life, the person that kept fire lit within his veins and showed him the glory that could be found in compassion and not cruel supremacy. Their life together had been awesome, but far, far too short. There was not enough kindling to keep his inferno alight. And so he regressed, back into the creature of ice he had once been, without her fire to thaw his impermeable shell.

Many claimed that he still held a small flame within him, valiantly trying to preserve her magic, but they were dreamers and fools. This time, the light had gone out for good.
