Superstitions

Word Count: 380

"Aujourd'hui, je vais parler en français. C'est pratique parce que j'ai un examen à venir bientôt si tu comprends mon raisonnement pour parler une langue étrangère, Inuyasha?"

The hanyou looked at her as if she had grown another head, and the miko had to choke back the urge to laugh. Honestly, she wasn't talking gibberish, it was just a foreign language! There was no reason for everyone in this era to treat her like a freak just because she didn't always speak in Japanese!

Miroku had been incredibly curious to learn about this langauge so very different from his own- politely requesting that Kagome might perhaps, teach him, when she had the time? The young woman had readily agreed, knowing that teaching the monk would help her develop her own understanding of the strange pronounciations and completely unfamiliar alphabet.

She had also started to learn Spanish and German- the latter being ridiculously hard in her opinion- and whenever the group stopped for the night, Kagome would amble away from camp, reciting her lessons aloud. She never had any problems; and in doing so, wouldn't disturb the others- mainly Inuyasha actually- who were a little "creeped out" by the alien words.

But one night was different. She had never had any problems before, but that didn't mean that trouble wouldn't arise in the future. She had been ambushed by bandits, planning on selling her- but once they heard the strange sounds coming from her lips, superstition took hold. Their main fear was that she was a demon disguising itself in order to trap men such as themselves. Blind panic quickly deafened them to her pleas, and they attacked the time traveller, beating her violently before fleeing for their lives.

Shippo found her hours later, broken, but doggedly hanging on to consciousness. The others had swiftly followed; and they had cared for her whilst Inuyasha went to hunt down the filth that had done this to her.

Kagome couldn't understand it- people were so afraid of what they didn't know that they abandoned rational thought and lashed out, hoping that whatever they hit couldn't hit back. It was disgusting and wrong, but most of all, it had been terrifying. She doubted whether she would ever speak another word ever again.
