Chapter 2: Lighting Bonfires

Kagome wiped the sweat off her brow, leaning back to observe her handiwork. “Eh, not too shabby. Just a few tweaks here and there, and we should be ready to go.” She turned her head slightly for her companion’s opinion. “What do you think?”

The gentle breeze played with locks of silver as they curled around their owner’s striped cheeks. “The structure is adequate,” he offered lowly.

Yeah, but…” The woman chewed on her bottom lip. “Is this enough firewood? I don’t want it to die out quickly.”

Is that not what the whelp is for?”

Kagome stifled a laugh. “Inuyasha doesn’t chop down trees with the Tessaiga!” She paused after a moment. “I mean, not intentionally. His claws normally take care of that.”

So why is it that this one accompanies you in his place?”

told you, Sesshoumaru-sama,” Kagome began. “He and Miroku-sama went to go exorcise a youkai in another village. Didn’t I mention things get a little weird on Halloween?”

“…Hn.”

But besides that, how’s Rin-chan? Not still disappointed about the apple incident, I hope?”

The fox kit is keeping her company. Jaken is watching over them.”

Ah… I hope he’s alright.” The priestess knew the two children liked to play mischievous tricks at the imp’s expense. Sometimes, however, she wouldn’t say he didn’t deserve it. But with Shippou excelling in kitsune school, the pranks tended to be a little extreme.

The boy was growing up so fast.

Kagome eyed her arrangement of branches for the bonfire. “Well, I think this should be good but I’d feel better if we had some extra wood just in case. I hope you don’t mind escorting me out to the forest again?”

Sesshoumaru sighed inaudibly at her pleading look. “This one shall lead you, miko. Such a small flame will not protect your village from danger.”
