Chapter 10: Soul Cake

Alright, who’s ready for treats?”

Ooh! Rin would like one, please!”

Kagome giggled at the girl’s enthusiasm. “Just one? I’ll give you more if you do something for me. Let’s call it…” The woman hummed in thought. “A trade of sorts. How does that sound?”

What do we have to do?” Shippou piped up, rocking back and forth on the heels of his little fox feet. His tail swished behind him excitedly. The red-haired kitsune loved a good bargain every once in a while, especially if that meant getting a few sweets from Kagome in return. His favorite was the ninja food from her time.

I’ll give you guys two options,” the older female told them. “You may either say a prayer for someone that has passed away, or…” The children leaned forward slightly in anticipation of her next words as a wide, Cheshire cat grin appeared on her face. “You may do whatever it takes to scare Sesshoumaru-sama,” she finished, snickering at their instant looks of disbelief.

Impossible!” Shippou declared, mouth agape. “Nothing can scare him!”

Rin would never want to frighten her Lord!” Sesshoumaru’s ward added as if she was appalled by the very idea. Her tone was highly scandalized.

Kagome didn’t even bat an eyelash at their protests, shrugging them off with the ease of a parent. She had put up with Inuyasha’s mood swings for a long while. “I said you didn’t have to. Prayers are still good for soul cakes, you know. And besides, I already think I managed to scare him a little earlier.”

You did?” they echoed wonderingly. “How?”

Well…” the priestess trailed off, pausing when she sensed the daiyoukai’s presence outside of her hut. Smiling to herself, she winked at the pair. “It’s a secret. I don’t think he’ll appreciate me tarnishing his reputation by telling you two.”

Aww… But he’s not even here, Kagome!” Shippou whined. “It’s not like he’ll ever know.”

Know what, kit?” a deep voice inquired from the doorway.

Se-sessh–”

Kagome placed a calming hand on Shippou’s head. “Run along now, and take Rin-chan with you. I’ll save some cakes for you, okay? I’m sure our neighbors will share theirs in the meantime.”

O-okay, Kagome. We’ll be back later.”

After throwing a suspicious look over his shoulder at the adults, the boy and his friend were gone.
