She had been certain that Sesshomaru would be disgusted by her display of emotion, but instead she had seen his eyes soften slightly before he turned them away to stare out of the tinted window.

He hadn’t exactly started rubbing her back while whispering soothing nonsense in her ear but Kagome felt comforted just the same.

At least he didn’t deride her for her weakness, she was grateful for that.

“Miko you need to prepare yourself, what I am going to tell you will not be pleasant. I had hoped to leave you in ignorance of these events, but judging by your current physical and mental state I no longer have that option.”

She listened to his ominous words with a sense of dread. She had wanted answers for so long and yet now that it appeared that she would get them she couldn’t help remembering that old saying about being careful what you wished for.

“All those that you once traveled with, indeed all those aside from you and myself that fought against Naraku are now dead.”

She had known that this was most likely the case, but actually hearing the words was like a knife in the gut.

She had hoped that she would have the chance to see them again someday, even as she had told herself that they were gone, some small hope had survived and now with only a few terse words she was left with nothing.

 “Oh that is not the worst of the story miko, not the worst by far! After their deaths their souls were taken from the underworld; they are now the unwilling servants of a lich.”
