Breathe With Me Now

A/N: These pieces really inspire a very different mood/style to my usual writing... As I was listening, this scene popped into my head with the music accompanying it! XD  Hope you folks enjoy and please review (if you would like to).

Prompt: Only Four Men- Paul Haslinger (The Three Musketeers OST)

"Please... dont do it. I don't care what happens if you aren't safe! Rin needs you! Your mother needs you- the entire West needs you, Sesshoumaru! ...I need you."

Her voice echoed in the hollow chamber of his youki, the energy encompassing them barely keeping their enemy's vicious barrages at bay. The miko's life rang in the sound of her pleas, all of it; her love for him, her anger at the inevitability of their situation, her desperation to stop him from doing the one thing he had to.

He looked down at her, assessed her soul through her eyes, and Kagome knew that those red irises were not those of the man she loved but those of the demon who put honour above all else. In that single, world-destroying moment, she knew that he would leave her there, helpless and shivering, as he sprinted towards death and what he thought was her salvation.

"No."

For a beautiful instant, the inuyoukai's eyes reverted to their customary golden hue... but it- her only chance- passed by before she could seize it.

"You will not order this Sesshoumaru, miko. I will do as I see fit."

Kagome gritted her teeth, tears forcing their way through her traitorous eyelids.

"And this Sesshoumaru sees fit to protect the woman he loves at all costs. Because I need you."

Blue eyes snapped open- too late!... he had already emerged on the other side of the barrier. She cried his name, a sheer, animalistic summons; as if she could return him to her side, command time to reverse, defy the very laws of nature, the progression of the universe- through sheer will alone.

He died whilst she watched. Everything she knew crumbled before her very eyes. The oceans became barren deserts, the sky fell to earth as the god's tumbled from their thrones in the heavens. It was as she had feared.

And it was as he had believed.

She was saved.
