Disclaimer: Though it saddens me to say it, I don’t own anything relating to Takahashi-sensei’s Inuyasha. However, the plot and/or ideas of this drabble series do belong to me, and a nod of recognition goes to the creator of this challenge.

A/N: None. :)

Chapter 9: Comparisons

He should have known they wouldn’t be the same.

If their age difference wasn’t a sign, he didn’t know what was. How could he dismiss that which was so blatantly obvious?

The woman he wanted was not a child. While they both looked somewhat similar, he was beginning to understand that not all humans could be lumped into the same category. Rin, as his ward shyly confessed to him was her name one day, was timid and was at the stage where she still needed guidance. This, he supposed, was due to the abuse she had suffered in her old village.

Inuyasha’s priestess, Kag-something or other, was not nearly as obedient–or quiet, for that matter. She behaved almost as brashly as her dog-eared companion, but admittedly had more sense than he did. And it was her fighting spirit that managed to attract the Western Lord’s attention. Unlike many others, she had refused to simply lay down and die, which some would believe was an honor, considering they would meet their end at his claws.

But, like his ward, it seemed as though the older female was not meant to perish by his hands. It didn’t mean he would stop trying, but he couldn’t overlook the fact that she had a way of evading his efforts thus far. It was almost laughable how he’d ridiculed the half-breed for protecting a human, and yet, he himself easily allowed one to become his follower.

The irony was not lost on him… At all.
