Afflictions

Disclaimer: Though it saddens me to say it, I don’t own anything relating to Takahashi-sensei’s Inuyasha. However, the plot and/or ideas of this drabble series do belong to me, and a nod of recognition goes to the creator of this challenge.

A/N: None. :)

Chapter 7: Afflictions

It was the nightmares that bothered him.

Unsettling as they were, they were not his to claim. Only in the darkness of the night did the youngest member of his group allow her innermost terrors to take command of her heart. Adorned in a new kimono, she thrashed in her sleep, whining pitifully in the back of her throat.

But she did not cry.

It seemed as though unconscious, she tried to keep herself from being a burden–an admirable effort even though the ringing in his ears suggested otherwise.

He wondered then about her dreams. Did she relive the scene of her death over and over again? Was the pit of the underworld truly so frightening? He supposed it would be…for a human. However, he held no such fear.

His retainer often squawked in complaint of the girl’s plight, but knew he couldn’t do anything else, lest he incurred his master’s wrath… A boot to the head or being pelted by a flying rock weren’t the most ideal of punishments, but much better than the sight of Sesshoumaru’s smile.

The imp believed that expression alone could scare the living daylights out of anyone.

Sesshoumaru just thought he was incredibly stupid.
