Best I Never Had by Aviel

Observations

Disclaimer: Though it saddens me to say it, I don’t own anything relating to Takahashi-sensei’s Inuyasha. However, the plot and/or ideas of this drabble series do belong to me, and a nod of recognition goes to the creator of this challenge.

A/N: None. :)

Chapter 12: Observations

The scent of a youkai was near. Its rotting corpse irritated his nose, along with the stench of his wounded half-brother.

Ignoring the wide-eyed looks from his ward and retainer, he emerged from the fog and lifted the head of the fallen oni, glancing briefly at its purple skin and crimson eyes. His amber gaze narrowed contemplatively on the rows of sharp fangs that decorated the inside of its maw.

Tessaiga… His sire’s weapon had been shattered by such a weak creature? Ridiculous. It was almost unfathomable how inept and incapable Inuyasha was. The whelp truly did not appreciate the gifts he had been given. First the woman, and then his heirloom? The Lord of the West would take them, if only to demonstrate the fool’s utter worthlessness.

Satisfied with his inspection of the macabre scene, he continued along the path, the youkai’s hideous head over his shoulder. Another scent on the wind bothered him, for his senses did not lie.

Inuyasha’s blood was no longer that of a half-demon’s.

. . .

Kaijinbou was no more impressive than the ramshackle home he lived in or his pathetic aura, which was like the flame of a very small candle. It could be easily snuffed out.

He’d had some doubts as to whether or not Kaijinbou had the skill to forge a blade rivaling the Tessaiga, but if the deviant swordsmith had been mentored by Totosai… He should have some potential. Especially since the Dog General’s heir had gone through the trouble of reviving the head of the slain youkai. He would not allow his efforts to go to waste.

However, if Kaijinbou’s personality was anything to go by… He would be overcome by his own creation. That is, if the sword he made was a powerful one.

The wait was almost too long.
