When It Rains by LM Bluejay

I Scream

I Scream

Gurinman glared at the man in front of him. “What are you doing here?”

“I thought I just told you. Nice to see you, too, by the way. I’m doing well. Thanks for asking.”

“I said no such thing and you know it. How are you even alive?”

A frustrated cry caught their attention. They watched her snag napkin after napkin in an attempt to try to save her dress. But after going through twenty sheets or so her efforts appeared to be wasted. A giant light brown stain remained on the black and cream flower print fabric. She held up the ruined the piece and mumbled, “For fucks sake, why?”

Realization of what he’d done had finally hit him, but before Gurinman could apologize Frankie rushed over and shoved him aside.

“Missus H? Oh my gosh! What happened?”

“He did it,” Toga pointed at Gurinman.

“I-I...”

“Dude! What the fuck!?” Frankie grasped Kagome’s shoulders and smiled. “Don’t you worry! I’m a wiz at stuff like this.”

Kagome sighed and shook her head. “It would take a miracle to get this out.”

“Just hang tight, Missus H.” And with that she was off in a flash.

Kagome leaned further in her chair when she spotted Gurinman’s approach while fiddling with his fingers.

“I am so terribly sorry,” he bowed.

“You should be,” Toga tsked. “If that were me I’d sue.”

“Nobody asked you,” Gurinman squawked. “Ms. Higurashi…”

“Don’t even worry about it. I’ve got enough already piled on my plate.”

Toga noticed the pointed stare she gave Gurinman and brought a closed hand to his mouth. “Ahem, well you two obviously have some drama going on so allow me to take my leave.” He snatched up Kagome’s hand and kissed it. “Ms. Higurashi, it’s been a pleasure, and Jay…meh.” He left before either could respond and not a moment later Frankie returned

“I’m back!” In her hand she carried a large damp towel. “Wait, wasn’t there another guy here, too?”

“He’s gone,” Gurinman announced.

Frankie sneered at the older man. “And he didn’t take you with him? I am SO going to tweet this... Anywho! Are you ready for a miracle Missus H?” Kagome coolly nodded her head. Frankie had her close her eyes before bringing the towel to the ruined cloth. “Abra. Kadabra. Alakazam. Presto! The stain is now magically gone!”

Kagome’s eyes shot open. Sure enough on her dress the brown spot was nowhere to be found. “What did you? How did you?”

“It’s a family secret,” Frankie winked. “We do own a small cleaners after all.” She brushed off Gurinman’s stare while Kagome wrapped her in a giant hug.

They sat at one of the tables outside. Lunch hour had passed and the restaurant was nearly vacant. Kagome waved to Frankie ‘good bye’ as the young woman left at the end of her shift.

“Such a sweet girl,” Kagome smiled.

“She’s something alright,” Gurinman huffed. “The little demon is mighty quick.”

Kagome rolled her eyes. “And I’m going to pretend you didn’t just say that. Not only did she get you free food but she also saved your ass. I mean talk about nerve. Besides, you don’t see me calling your friend a demon and he’s got to be the biggest Quagmire that I’ve ever met.”

Gurinman scoffed. “He’s a demon as well, one of the oldest ones on this earth.”

“Seriously? The man looked at least ten years younger than you? So what, is everyone in your eyes a demon?”

“No, you’re definitely human.”

“What a relief. Anyway, how about we get down to business? Finish telling more about this whole heir thing.” Kagome clapped her hands. “Go.”

“I’m going to need you to be a tad bit more specific and there are a few inquiries I’d like ask as well.”

She rested a cheek on her knuckles. “Let’s compromise and take turns then.”

“Splendid idea,” he raised a hand. “Ladies first.”

“Oh, a gentleman! First and foremost is this a scam? You know I can always smell a liar.”

“While I highly doubt that to be true; no, this is not a ruse. I would not be here in front of you now if that were simply the case. As a representative of Oni International we are bound by an indisputable contract to…”

“Keep it brief,” she smiled sweetly.

“Is that how it is?”

“Haven’t you ever played twenty questions?”

“I’m familiar with it,” Gurinman narrowed his eyes. “Game on, Ms. Higurashi.”

“It’s still your turn.”

“So it is.”

“Still waiting…”

“How did you afford the insemination?”

“I received a generous donation from a friend. Was that man earlier my kid’s dad?”

“They share the same blood, but no.”

She released the breath she unconsciously held. “Oh, Thank God! For a second there I was worried.”

“Indeed. Were you ever in your life once married?”

Kagome stared at him for a moment. “Why do you ask?”

“Because the de- I mean your friend kept referring to you as ‘Mrs.’ yet you never mentioned once ever having a husband. You don’t strike me as the divorce type.”

“That’s because some things are better left unsaid and that’s been my nickname from her since she was ten. But yes, I was married once. But things didn’t exactly work out. One thing led to another and I ended up with Sho alone.”

That sparked some curiosity. “Was this man the reason you went with that fertility option or was it something you decided on your own?”

Her voice took on a frosty tone. “That’s honestly none of your business. My turn. Since Sho’s father wants to meet him so bad, why’d he send you and not come in person?”

“My client is a rather important and busy person. His personal security requires a screening before meeting can be made.”

“So his safety is that much more important than ours? Or is that he can simply afford it? And that brings me to another thing. You keep calling him your client. What the hell is Sho’s father name? The least you can do is spare me that.”

Gurinman stared at her for a moment. “Sesshomaru Yukimura,” he stated evenly.

“Never heard of him.”

“That’s not surprising. Lord Sesshomaru is the head of a…special type of kingdom…one you won’t see at first glance.”

“He’s a drug lord?!”

“Of course not!”

“Then give me something better to work with before I lead my kid in the dark. Look Mr. Gurinman, I’m going to be frank with you. The real fact of the matter is that Sho is no longer considered a dependent; twenty-three and fresh out of college with a bachelor’s in science. Nothing was ever just handed to him; he’s had to always work hard to get what he want. And even though he’s the love of my life I still can’t wait until he finally moves out. I guess what I’m trying to say is when it’s all said and done it’s going to be his choice on whether or not he wants to meet his father. And I’m almost a hundred percent sure he will…but that’s why I want to meet the guy first. Yukimura has people like you at his disposal. All Sho has is me.”
