Once the reporters were escorted off the property Sesshomaru held an emergency meeting in his office.

Kagome opened the conversation. “Why’d you do it?”

“By fluke, I assure you. While over the phone with Cordelia it sort of just slipped. I didn’t expect her to take me so seriously.”

Kagome slowly blinked. “So this was all of your friend’s doing?”

“I’d hardly consider us friends. More like bitter rivals. The woman has a keen ear for gossip.”

“Mother, what did you say?”

“Prepare to be blown by a stroke of genius.” Slowly, she exhaled and clapped her hands. “Oh, joyous splendid occasion! The Western house rejoices the return of Sesshomaru’s long lost wife and child. Forced away by internal strife, cruel fate had driven them away from home. They endured a simpler life for years out of the watchful eyes of our enemies and our own. It wasn’t until lady luck smiled upon us that the missing piece of the family was found. And though the time passed was long and bitter and better memory tested, the Western house still pushes forward. We celebrate in getting to relearn our once lost loved ones again all over.” She sighed in content and smiled. “There. I think that just about covers it. So, what do you think? Does it not make for a wondrous tale?”

“No!” Kagome yanked her hair. “Because it’s the biggest lie I’ve ever heard! It sounds no more real than a fairytale straight out of Disney. And no offense, Mr. Yukimura, but I don’t even think you’re my type.”

Lady Kaiya leaned forward. “And how do you know that for sure? You’ve only been here for a few days; most of which you’ve spent in your room.”

Kagome quickly gestured between her and Sesshomaru. “I could spend an entire year here and this still wouldn’t happen.”

“Is that so?” The Lady purred. “Then how about a wager?”

“Nope. I quit gambling, have nothing to bet and you’re terrible. Whatever you’re scheming, leave me out of it.”

“Unfortunately, that’s now impossible.” A young woman in business attire walked in. She pushed thick orange rimmed glasses up her nose. “It would seem that word of Lady Kaiya’s announcement has already spread.” She passed out various articles. The common theme they all shared was a large picture of Sesshomaru and Kagome at its center. Some warmly congratulated the union while others heavily criticized it.

“Holy crap! That was fast! Hasn’t it only been like a freaking hour!?” Kagome stopped breezing through the sheets and looked up. “Wait. Do I know you?”

“We’ve spoken over the phone once. Rin Asakura; Second Deputy Chief Manager of Oni International. I’m here on Mr. Gurinman’s behalf until he finishes taking care of business. For now he wants the house on lockdown. That means zero contact with anyone outside.” Rin sent Lady Kaiya a pointed glare. Kagome raised her hand. “Yes?”

“So about the part where I’m not involved?”

“I would love that more than anything. However, because of Lady Kaiya all eyes will now be focused on you. How you look. How you dress. How you carry yourself. How well you adapt…”

“Wait-wait-wait! Hold on! I mean…can’t we just say this was all just, I dunno, one big misunderstanding?”

“A misunderstanding of this caliber would cast a thousand stones of doubt on the Western monarch. You were essentially announced as Lord Sesshomaru’s mate and it would be disastrous to claim otherwise now.”

“That’s bullshit,” Kagome huffed. “You’re just blowing things out of proportion.” Her eyes flew to Sesshomaru.

He sat the sheets on his desk. “Rin, what are our options?”

“Very few at this present moment. Your status prevents something like this from being ignored. As of right now the most logical course of action is to play house until interest is lost. That or prepare for possible elimination. It’s as simple as that really. Just know that whatever choice you do decide I will dutifully stand behind it.” Her coat pocket began to buzz. “Now if you’ll all excuse me, I must be going.” She bowed and exited the room.

Kagome yanked on her hair. “What the hell is going on? Somebody tell she wasn’t serious!” She looked between Sesshomaru and his mother. “Don’t either of you have anything to say?”

Sesshomaru placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “I’m sorry.”

“I’m not.” Lady Kaiya rose. “I expect a heartwarming thanks from the both of you. Bear in mind there’s no rush. I’ve got all the time in the world.”

Kagome leapt from out of her chair.

Sesshomaru caught her and held her still. The intent in her eyes had nearly made his grasp loosen. “Calm down. We’re going to sort through this.”

“And while you two are doing that, I’ve got a ceremony to prepare. Cheers.” Lady Kaiya merrily exited the office.

Kagome pushed away from him. “What the hell’s your mother’s problem?”

“You had her first grandchild.”

“And that’s my fault!?”

“For her it’s enough.” Sesshomaru went back to his desk and picked up an article. “Her reasoning is her own, but the story has some merit.”

“Don’t tell me you actually agree with this?”

He looked at her with eyes golden. “I do.”
