Dream from Tales Past

.

The sheets were brand new and soft like silk, but still sleep refused to claim him. The hours seemed to drag as he tossed and turned throughout the night. Bored, Sho checked his iPhone. The white numbers flashed it was half past five. His mother’s call had killed all drowsiness. He rolled over to his side and faced the balcony’s end. A waning crescent glowed with roaming clouds in a starless night.

Sho closed his eyes he yawned. Maybe…coming here was a mistake. He felt a shadow over him. Slowly, his eyelids slid open. A man wearing a black hooded coat stood in the room. Sho ducked under the comforter. Holy shit!? He dared to take a peek. The intruder stood a mere few inches from him.

“Your worlds…aren't connected.”

Ansem!? What the fuck! Sho slammed his eyes shut and counted. When he re-opened them the man was gone. These hallucinations are out of control. For a second there I thought he was real.

“So you’re not gonna look up?”

Sho jumped and spotted the man above him. He stood calmly on the ceiling. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me! “What the hell are you?”

“Labels aren't really that important.” He kicked from off the wall. After performing a midair summersault he landed squarely on his feet. “I’ve come to kill two birds: your ignorance and a special trip.”

Sho glared at him evenly. “And how do you plan to accomplish that?”

“With the Western jewel, of course!” He threw a darted sheet to the wall. “It’s not kidnapping if there’s no ransom. Plus, I’m telling them where you are.”

“If you lay so much as finger on me I will drop you.”

“There’s hope for you yet.” His hands moved like lightning. A bright light erupted.

Sho quickly shielded his eyes.

.

The sound of birds chirping aroused him. The heat from the sun made him groan. Wearily, he opened his eyes. What he saw made him rapidly blink. He quickly got off the ground. Every which way he turned he saw nothing but trees.

Alright, Sho. Stay calm. His heart leaped for joy when he spotted Nightmare Moon. Sho picked his phone from off the grass. All I’ve got to do is make a call. ‘No service’ flashed across the screen. His eye twitched at the tiny red cross. “What, no bars!? This is madness!!” He kicked the earth. “Wait! The GPS!” He pulled up the app. The loading circle rotated for minutes until ‘Wi-fi not found’ finally popped up. He scowered the settings in his phone but not a single network was to be found.

Frustrated, Sho shoved the phone in his pants pocket. His legs moved of their own accord. This dream is complete bullshit. He came to stop in front of a field. It looked like it could stretch for miles. Not a single car, plane, or building was in sight.  Just how far in the fucking country am I? I need to stop somewhere to eat. Subconsciously, he whipped out his phone and began typing until he remembered. “S’not fair.” His stomach growled loudly. “I need a triple whopper with extra bacon and cheese.”

“Anything else to go with that?”

“Let’s see, a large fry and...”

“Half-and-half of lemonade and Sprite?”

“Finally, someone who gets me!” Sho paused. Wait, who am I talking to? He spun around. There stood his captor. Coolly, he unveiled his hood. Long white dreads rested in a side ponytail. Elfin ears held several golden hoops. His eyes were ice blue and his skin was sorrel.

“You may call me Cloud.”

Sho stifled a laugh. “What the hell are you wearing?”

“You’re one to talk. Have a look.” Cloud conjured a mirror. All Sho did was stare. They stood like that for half an hour. “If you look any longer the glass’ll break.”

“What are these two things that keep twitching?” He pulled at the small triangles.

“I’m gonna go on a limb and say your ears.”

Back at the guest house...

Several knocks rapped against the door. “Oi, asshole! Are you alive? You been held up in here all day.” Inuyasha peered inside. His charge was nowhere to be seen. As he turned to leave he spotted the paper. Curious, he snatched it from the wall and read:

It flies and it crawls.

Present gifts with days passing.

Former current's fate.

Inuyasha crumbled the sheet and tossed it. “That riddle was lame as hell.”
