A high pitched scream rung. A stampede of feet roared.

He had just stepped from the office when she suddenly tackled him to the floor.

Quickly, Kagome picked herself off his chest. “Oh my gosh! I am so sorry!”

“What the devil is going on?” Gurinman got up and dusted his suit while he awaited an answer.

She fidgeted in place. “You probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

“Try me,” he insisted.

Her eyes darted back and forth. She crept close to him and whispered. “I’m being chased by a ghost.” When he didn’t reply quick enough Kagome tossed her arms and cried. “See? I told you!”

“What exactly does this ghost look like?”

She pondered for a moment. “It had freakishly yellow glowy eyes.”

“Like a demon?” He arched a brow.

“No, like a ghost. I just told you. Demons are clearly fictional.”

“But specters are that much more palpable.”

“Look, there are live documentaries,” she huffed. “Haven’t you ever seen Paranormal Activity 1 thru 4?”

“Unfortunately, I haven’t.”

They were interrrupted by a haughty laugh. Lady Kaiya swiftly emerged before them. “There you are darling. You know you’re quite fast for a human.”

Kagome ducked behind Gurinman.

“Is this your ghost?” he inquired.

She tightened her grip and nodded.

Sesshomaru entered the hall. His attention immediately went to his child’s mother glued to Gurinman’s back. A low growl rumbled. “Why do you cling to the imp?”

“My sentiments exactly,” the demoness purred. “Who knew that our dear Jay would prove be such able competition.”

“I beg your pardon?” Gurinman snorted. “To even consider that statement folly would be very generous. But I better clear up all misconception now before things quickly turn for the worst.” He pulled a reluctant Kagome in front of him. “Ms. Higurashi, I would like to introduce you to Lady Kaiya Yukimura. She is the past head of Western house and mother of Lord Sesshomaru. And to dispel your illusory worries she has not transitioned to the spectral realm…yet. She can be quite the trickster at times and as for her eyes…let’s just say they’re specialized lens.”

Kagome heard only half of what he’d said. “W-wait! Hold on a sec. You’re his mom? You two could practically pass for twins.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment,” the Lady chuckled and looked the woman over. “And you’ve just barely made it to being about average. Good for you, dear! Congratulations.”

Kagome bit her tongue and smiled.

“Whoops! Look at the time! Lady Kaiya, we have that important engagement we need to attend.” Gurinman grabbed her hand and gently led her away. He paused briefly by Sesshomaru’s ear. “Remember what we discussed.”

The older couple disappear around the corner. Sesshomaru and Kagome were left in the company of each other and their awkward silence.

Five long minutes passed by.

Sesshomaru rocked on the back of his heels. “So…are you hungry?”

“You know your mom is really something else.”

“It comes with the territory of age.”

“She actually doesn’t look that old. Nope, she could even pass for someone born my year if I were to be completely honest. I guess having money allows you to do that. That must’ve been one hell of a facelift. And her tummy tuck wasn’t bad either. And you know what else? I bet I could remove 90% of that beauty with a wet Kleenex.”

Sesshomaru stared.

“Oh right, sorry! Sometimes I let my mouth run away before I can catch it. I didn’t mean any of that about your mom. That was rude of me. Bad Kagome!” She laughed a bit to herself. “I can already see Sho shaking his head and calling me salty.”

“You let him taste you?”

“No! It’s just an expression for being mad or upset. Get with the times oldie. I bet you don’t even know what Facespace is, do you?”

“No. Not at all. I stopped caring about stuff like that after Atari.” He slowly stepped in one direction.

Kagome followed him down the corridor. There was a five foot distance between them as they wandered the long carpeted hall. “Atari, huh?”

“I bought the very first one.”

“I’m sure. I think I must’ve saved up my allowance for nearly a year before I could finally get the game. Of course it got stolen that very same week.”

“I…don’t know what to say.”

Kagome glanced his way and smirked. “Life is rough. Point blank. Nothing in this world is free. And your ups are as guaranteed as your downs. It’s all part of the experience, you know?”

He nodded. “Are these the lessons that you’ve taught our son?”

“And among other things, yes. Is that a problem?” she crossed her arms.

“None from over here. Though..., Mother might have a few words.”

“And she can kiss my…”

“Sir! We have visual.” The sound of metal clanked loudly. The alloy armor against the wall shifted. It snapped to attention and saluted. “As you’ve predicted, he’s getting ready to move. And also I think we’ve got a code 10-53.”

“You think?” Sesshomaru growled. “Who’s down?” he quickly demanded.

“Sir! The woman at your feet now! She hit the ground pretty hard.”
