When It Rains by LM Bluejay

It shouldn’t have been that hard, but her mind absolutely denied her goal. Kagome could think of a hundred different ways to start up a poem, but coming up with a simple apology was utterly beyond her.

Taking a brief break from her dilemma, curious eyes drifted back and forth across the walls. There were lavish pottery and artifacts on marble stands and in glass cases. And the many bright paintings posted proved to be great attention seekers as well.

“Oh wow!” Kagome walked over to the huge picture mounted above. It was encased in a solid gold frame with tree limbs and leaves carved along its edges. In the distance a loving couple sat on a hill underneath a crescent moon while closer up a child dressed in blue ran across the field chasing lightning bugs. “This is amazing.”

Gurinman paused to eye the portrait. “Ah, yes. That one is an ancient family portrait. One of the few lucky enough to survive to this day.”

“The colors are really vibrant and mesmerizing,” Kagome beamed. “And the little girl is so cute and adorable.”

Gurinman corrected his glasses and chuckled. “And now you have something else to add that to your list of apologies.”

“What did I do now?”

“You called my lord a girl.”

“I guess he vaguely reminds me of Sho. But there’s no way that’s him,” she defended. “Look at all that white hair? He must have been one seriously stressed out kid unless…” Her eyes quickly zoomed back to the couple. She just realized that their hair also matched the moon’s brilliance. “…unless it’s something that he was born with it. But…but that’s so surreal.”

“Indeed.” Gurinman caught the troubled look that crept up her face. “Mind if I ask you something, Ms. Higurashi? What did Sho look like when he was first born?”

“Like an angel,” she instantly stated. Absolute confidence was written in her expression. Kagome peeked at the portrait once more before quickly walking away.
