Prologue

Izanagi, god of life and Izanami, goddess of death created everything. Their children helped to create and rule the rest of creation. As things happen, the creations of the Kami began to grow and mature, but problems, distrust and jealousy took root.

In order to try and help their mortal children to understand each other and the will of the gods, Tenshi were formed and sent to guide. Some fell to baser instinct and became mired in the world around them. They lost their divine light and became earthbound spirits of nature or youkai. Others fell to love and married the most fragile of the mortals, the humans. They gave their immortality and inhuman natures to be with those they loved, but the blessings of the Kami still flowed in their veins and so , as a balance to the youkai, reiki users were born. A yin to yang.

Only three tenshi kept true to themselves, Three celestial maidens. They locked themselves in a palace of crystal and hid in the mirror lake. Using a mirror they watched as their brothers and sisters lost themselves and caused an imbalance. They watched as balance and tenuous peace was restored. They watched as the truth was lost in time and as the mortal children of the kami began to grow distant and hateful to one another.

Two tenshi had lost themselves to their power. They used their powers to try to rip open the portals between the earth, the heavens and the underworld. A young warrior youkai subdued the older of the two, trapping his soul in a sword and preventing him from bringing hell to earth. The younger was injured and fled to heal and plan his revenge. The warrior was injured and close to death so Inzanagi gave him a drop of his blood, healing the warrior of his injuries on the right side of his body. Izanami gave him a drop of her blood and healed the wounds on the left of his body. And so he lived to build his empire.

The maidens watched it all. The oldest, Kaguya was especially interested in the young warrior, for she had fallen in love. The warrior took his childhood friend as his mate to save her from her father’s wrath. So long as she came to him alone in her heat and gave him his heirs he would protect her always and they could both seek their pleasures and love elsewhere. As the years went by, Kaguya wasn’t content to watch through her mirror. She went to earth and met her love who returned her love in full. The warrior had a son born in the winter. Kaguya grew lax in her watching of her sisters.

The youngest, the maiden of spring and life, loved nature and would often sneak away in order to frolic in the spring meadows and woods. On one such occasion she was frightened and chased by wolves. A voice led her to a small cave where inside lived two spiders., Anansi, a female spider from a dark land far away and her mate Magatsuhi, a male spider from Nippon. Magatsuhi was weak and injured and asked the girl to come closer so he could see she was alright. As the maiden did she felt a tiny prick on her neck and fell to the floor. Anansi cocooned her and had her mate consume the girl to gain her power and increase his strength, but before he could she pushed her soul into a single flower protected by a barrier.

The middle maiden felt her sisters distress and traveled to earth to retrieve her. There she discovered her sisters soul. She too was poisoned but being older was able to take her sisters soul and flee only to be found by a little girl on her way to a temple to train as a priestess. The little miko to be was mourning her pet bird who died. The maiden, in order to see her sister and her own soul safe gave the girl the flower and put her soul into the dead bird in the cage. She told the girl to take them to the temple of the gods, but the demons were not to be stopped so easily and descended upon her. Luckily a warrior youkai was taking his only son on his first true hunt for his 100th birthday. In the end the girl was saved and delivered to the temple. And this of course is when everything went very wrong….
