The trail eventually led him through a hidden mountain pass, where he found himself standing just outside the city’s gates.

Stopping in front of its huge gilded entrance, he noted the two sentry wolves on each of its sides.

The monk neglected to mention any ‘guards’.

Ears alert, they growled at his approach, and stalked up to meet him.

Nonexistent claws craved for contact, but logic told him to yield. Steeling his poise as they sniffed for inspection, both wolves suddenly whined.

Puzzled by their yips and wagging tails, he strolled into the city as they stood guard once more.
