AN: I wrote this two years ago for a Drabble challenge. I'd forgotten to put it up here at the time.

The piano filled the house with its melancholy tones, weaving a helpless tale of loss and longing; shuddering at places and then running helter skelter in soulful confusion.

Mimi stood at the door of the living room, her old eyes filled with dark tears. She pressed her apron to her mouth to hold back a sob wondering at the young man in front of her weeping through his music. His usually bright gold eyes were now a dull amber. His white head was thrown back to gaze unseeingly at the ceiling while his fingers thundered out his confusion and agony.

Sesshoumaru was in the throes of rejection. Not because he was the rejected but the rejecter. He had never meant for things to go too far. She was to have been just another young woman he flirted with to pass the time, and when he was done, leave. But, things had turned out so very differently.

In the first place she had been too young…and so obviously naïve. But those eyes so alive and that happy, carefree smile had touched him in a way nothing had ever done.

The crashing of a chord revealed the distress in his mind. Sesshoumaru should have taken his response to her as a warning. And yet, he had been pulled into a vortex of his making; and she, sweet soul, had followed along trusting and willing.

The music softened, the tone tender and sweet. Her face swam before his eyes. Her smile. Her hair. Her aura of innocence and purity. Her small, slender hand reaching out to him. Her eyes, now, a sad appeal to be loved.

The keys jarred incoherently within the walls of the room and Sesshoumaru sat still in the aftermath of its dreary echo.

“Oh, Kagome! What have I done??”
