The Distress

Chapter 198 - The Distress

*Snow Wind* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)

She had felt it the instant her son made that wretched human his mate. The crescent moon on her forehead burned as it faded away, and she had spent the entire night thinking and planning how she could get her revenge. She couldn't believe Sesshoumaru had done something so stupid, so irresponsible. He was going to bring about the downfall of the Western Lands, all for a human woman. It was a foolish thing to do, and she was certain he would face serious consequences.

Lucky glared at her new companion, her nanny. As if she needed a babysitter! Still, at first she had hoped that this servant would bring about an end to her loneliness. She was wrong. The woman hadn't even so much as looked at her in hours. Instead she sat doing needlework, completely ignoring her charge and her responsibilities. The dog hadn't been walked in what felt like ages. It had been early afternoon the day before, nearly twenty-four hours, and she needed to go, now!

Kyou sighed, bored out of her mind. She glanced out the window and shivered reflexively. She was grateful that she wasn't out there in the blizzard that was blowing outside, but her new job was tedious. There was nothing to do but sit and wait for something to happen. It was times like these that she wished she could read. Instead, she was stuck embroidering, and her fingers were getting tired.

The dog decided she needed to communicate her current situation and began to bark. Kyou glared at her. "Oh, shut up. No one wants to hear it."

Lucky snarled, and then began to bark again, biting at her harness in an attempt to convey her need. When it didn't work, she headed over to where her leash hung from the wall and tugged at it, barking loudly.

"Oh, no. I'm not going out there. It's freezing. You'll just have to hold it." When the dog continued to bark, she rolled her eyes. "You know the nice thing about this job? No one really cares if you're taken care of or not. No one is going to check and make sure you've been walked. You're at my mercy. Do you even remember me? You had me beaten once for sneezing while delivering food to the table, as if I'd done it on purpose. You're lucky, Lucky, that I'm not returning the favor. Now shut up!"

The former Lady of the West shook slightly. No, she hadn't remembered that, but she did now. The servant had apologized and begged not to be punished, but she had taken such glee in watching her being beaten for something so small. Why had her son chosen this particular servant to tend to her?

Unable to hold it any longer, Lucky squatted and began to pee, the sound loud on the stone floor. Kyou stood up, dropping her embroidery to the floor, and watched in shock as the urine spread, traveling along the cracks in the floor like a river. "How dare you?!" she yelled, pulling one hand back to smack the dog that she was charged with caring for. She thought better of it, however, and sighed. She needed her job, and she knew that the new Lady of the West did not want the dog injured. If she wanted to remain in the castle, she couldn't hit Lucky.

She sighed heavily once more, and shook her head. "I guess that was my fault," she said before heading out to collect the necessary supplies to clean up the still spreading mess.
