Chapter 181 - The Nanny

* Small Wild Flower* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)

After Kagome dropped off the fabric with Amime, she went to check in on the children, who were playing in Rin's room. When she opened the door, she couldn't help but laugh. "Did you guys use every piece of paper we bought you?" The entire floor, except for a small corridor of bare stone, was covered in paintings.

"No, not even close," Shippo said with a huge grin. "Look at what I painted, Mama. The ones on this side are mine, and over there are Rin's." The little girl by his side was jumping up and down on the balls of her feet, eagerly awaiting her mother's opinion of her artwork.

Rin had painted nothing but flowers, some up close and finely detailed and others from a distance. There were several fields of wildflowers, and Kagome was impressed by the child's skill. For never having painted before, she had done an amazing job. Shippo painted portraits, like he always did, recreating scenes from his past, as well as things he imagined would happen in the future.

"Wow, guys. You both did great. I couldn't paint like that, not even after taking a class in it. You're both very talented." She watched as Rin blushed and Shippo got a bashful expression on his face. They were interrupted when the door slid open roughly, and a voice caught their attention.

"Okay, you little brats. It's time to wash up for dinner." It took the demoness a moment to realize that the children were not alone, and when she did, her eyes widened until they looked like saucers. "My Lady, I wasn't aware that you had returned."

"Well, now you are," Kagome said through gritted teeth, trying to keep from screaming at this woman who had just disrespected her children. "Tell me, what is your position here at the palace?"

The servant's eyes showed that she knew she had seriously screwed up, and she answered hesitantly. "I am one of Rin's nannies."

"Not anymore, you're not," Kagome replied. "I'll get the children ready for dinner, and you can expect to be called to Sesshoumaru's office later this evening. An explanation for your behavior would be a good thing to have ready. Tell me your name, and then you are dismissed."

“My name is Kyou, My Lady, and I apologize for my tone."

"And for calling them brats? There's no excuse for that. Just go." Kagome watched as the demoness scurried away and sighed. "Does she always treat you like that, Rin?"

"Yeah, she's not very nice."

"Have you mentioned it to Sesshoumaru?" she asked the child.

"No, I didn't want to bother Papa. She wasn't so bad."

"Rin, it's very important that you tell us when someone is mean or rude to you. You're an heir to the West, you know. They should be treating you with respect. Besides, your nanny should be nice and loving to you, not nasty like she was. From now on, promise me you'll tell me, okay?" Rin nodded. "Is there anyone else that I should know about?" The little girl shook her head and Kagome sighed. "Good. You deserve better than Kyou."

Kagome wasn't sure what would happen to the demoness, but she was certain she would suffer some kind of punishment. If he left it up to her, she would assign the servant the worst position in the palace, which at the moment seemed to be cleaning up after Lucky, though she was certain there were other, less than desirable jobs, as well.
