Kagome stared at starry night sky, as she laid down the bed of grasses. The chilly breeze numbed her limbs, but she made no move to leave the comfort of the palace garden.

Sesshomaru’s presence invaded her senses, but she was too frozen to move. He stood above her head a second later, his golden eyes chastising. “Why are you here, miko?”

She licked her dry lips and answered, “Calming down. Dinner was stressful.”

He raised a brow at her. “You handled mother and Kimiko with a grace of a lady,” he told her, the compliment, which was said indifferently, made her smile. His eyes roamed the length of her body. “Yet, you are freezing yourself to death before my eyes.”

“Shh,” she shushed him, moving her frozen hand gingerly to tap the grass beside her. “Sit beside me, Sesshomaru-sama.”

He hesitated, assessing her mood and intention. Then with great reluctance, he gave in to her request.

“Close your eyes,” she whispered, moving her gaze at the stars again.

“Do not orde—“

“Shh. No one’s ordering anyone.” She closed her eyes. “See, I’m doing it. Why can’t you?”

“How would you know if my eyes were closed?”

She smiled again, seeing the stars behind her closed eyelids. “I would have to trust you not to deceive me, then.”

A pause. Then he spoke, “What do want to achieve by this?”

“Nothing, actually. But you want a witty remark so I gave you one,” she snorted at him.

“Kagome,” he said. “You cannot sleep here.”

She laughed at his concern and tension. “Calm down, Sesshomaru. Tonight, let’s disappear in the place of hope present within our souls. We can deal with everything tomorrow.”

“Hope is dangerous,” he warned her.

“Hmm…I’m attracted to danger,” she quipped.

“Hnn.” His warm hand found hers. “No wonder you’re here with me.”
