"Why are you not at the shiro, mother?" Sesshoumaru sneered at the demoness but didn’t move any closer, noting the grip she had on Rin’s delicate shoulders.

“I thought you would know, child. Did you not feel the change in the air? It was fairly obvious.”

Lady Tashio was the only one who could adopt that disrespectful tone towards him and not instantly find themselves short of their legs below the knees, and that only added to his mounting irritation.

“Enough, woman! You will tell this one what you know, your reasons for being here, and relinquish your grip on my ward.”

With a light laugh that barely managed to mask her dissatisfaction with his refusal to play her word games, the female daiyoukai ushered the girl back towards Sesshoumaru and turned away from them both, walking sedately through the trees.

Just as he thought that she would not comply with his other commands, his mother called back without turning,

“You may find it worth your while to accompany me, Sesshoumaru dear. I met a most interesting person not too long ago, who took the… difference quite hard. Of course, you could always keep following your conflicting instincts…?”

Watching his mother closely, he saw how her step slowed slightly, giving him the chance to take her up on her offer. Would she truly have anything remarkable, or was the infernal female leading him on a merry dance to nothing? He was not dependent on her, he was the Western Lord and he would find his own way forward.

A sigh reached his sensitive ears.

“And I had been so certain that he would want to find out why the feast changed everything. You cannot teach this child new tricks no matter how many bones are placed in front of him.”
