The Heroic and Super-Duper Trials of a Girl and a Demon by UnknownRandomness

A/N: This may be a new record of slowness for me. Sorry that I abandoned this story, please forgive me... and maybe leave a review? And yes, this chapter was inspired by the amazing anime Mushi-Shi if anyone here watches it. You should be able to spot the 'reference' with ease.

Prompt: Rainbow (Week 35)

Word Count: 303

The young woman marched determinedly through the woodland, her feet sliding on the wet detritus on the ground, caused by the earlier shower. Luckily for her, she had managed to take shelter under some particularly thick foliage when the rain had struck a few minutes ago and it hadn't lasted more than a minute- although it had been sufficiently heavy enough to make everything around her slippery.

Kagome let out a small yelp as her feet went flying out from under her body and she landed heavily on her rump. Groaning, the miko muttered a curse as she picked herself up from the forest floor, tentatively rubbing at her bruised flesh. At this rate, it would take her another four days to reach the shiro!

Breaking through the trees into a large clearing, Kagome gasped at the sight before her. An absolutely breath-taking rainbow gracefully arched through the sky and seemed to take root in the center of this gap in the woods. Without conscious thought, the transfixed woman stepped forward, outstretched hand clearly intending to touch the rainbow. The myriad of colours played across her awed face...

She was almost there, so close to this beautiful stream of light that she could smell it; the scent of rain, electricity and the playful yet intoxicating essence of magic. Scant centimetres of empty air separated her fingertips and the rainbow, one more step and they would be connected...

Suddenly, a panicked shout broke through her trance.

"No, Kagome! Don't touch it!"

Kagome started at the familiar voice, turning towards the sound with a whisper, "...Shippo?"

Only to stop as a force clamped around her wrist and numbness streaked up her arm. She tried to shout, but her body refused to follow her commands as her throat closed and darkness greeted her with open arms.
