Shippo sighed, used to these clashes by now. Rin stood wide-eyed, not yet used to these spats. Jaken cheered on his Lord and Ah-Un rested in the mid-morning sun. Kagome stood in front of the small crowd which had gathered to watch the two brothers fight outside of the guard's barracks. Unusually, it had been Sesshoumaru to initiate the confrontation, but Inuyasha hadn't done anything to deter it; he relished in the opportunity to pay his half-brother back for all the broken bones that he'd given him over the years.

Sesshoumaru had stubbornly resisted the idea that he could even be jealous; let alone of the hanyou. Yet he couldn't help the urge to kill the whelp when he made Kagome laugh, or when she gifted him with one of her wide smiles. The daiyoukai had only ever wished for one thing in Inuyasha's possession, and that was Tessaiga. Now, he no longer lusted after the sword-he was immensely powerful without it- and he was annoyed that Inuyasha again had something he wanted; the miko's loyalty.

He had never seen such devotion- Jaken was loyal, but he was a simpering creature who followed him from an admiration born of fear, whereas the miko respected his younger sibling, despite their odd relationship. It was infuriating.

Sesshoumaru cracked his knuckles as Inuyasha shifted his weight. They were about to launch themselves at each other when the only human present walked in between them.

"Kagome! What the hell are you doing? Get outta the way, I'm gonna rip Ice-Prince here a new arsehole!"

The young woman sighed, irritated. They hadn't fought for the whole eight days Inu had been here, and she'd thanked the Kami for the welcome change, and now all their progress had been undone by a snide comment from Sesshoumaru. She'd been surprised that he had cracked first.

Lips tightening, she turned to the spectators and saw her kit. "Hey Shippo, do you think you could go and get my rucksack for me? We're in need of some relief. Take Rin with you."

He nodded and quickly scampered off, Rin at his side. Turning back to the brothers, she let them have a piece of her mind. "Just what do you think you two are doing? You are setting an awful example for the youngsters and the guards! Everything was perfectly fine a few days ago! Has it ever occurred to you that you don't have to fight every time you see one another! Thank you Shippo."

Taking the proffered bag, Kagome thrust her hand into its depths, and after much shuffling, found what she wanted. "Inuyasha, if you promise me not to fight with your brother for the rest of your stay, you can have these marshmallows."

Sesshoumaru watched, fascinated, as his half-brother nodded, promised, and stuffed his face with the small sweet-smelling things. Walking up to the miko, who was also watching, he asked, "Where may I acquire these marsh-mallows? They worked better than subjugating him- although this Sesshoumaru would much rather have him eat dirt."

Half laughingly, half reprimandingly, Kagome answered, "That was the last pack, and he hadn't actually attacked yet, so there was no need to subjugate him."

"Hn. Pity."
