Chapter 40 - Unwilling

This was written for Stella's Proverbial Challenge, Prompt: If you lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas. 340 words.

Kagome awoke with a start at the sound of her phone ringing. She smiled softly as she realized that she'd snuggled up to Sesshoumaru at some point during their nap. She knew she shouldn't, that she was only encouraging him, but she couldn't help it. He made her feel safe and without him there beside her, she wouldn't have been able to sleep.

She squirmed away from him, finding it slightly difficult with his arm wrapped around her waist, but as she moved, he released her. She grabbed her phone off the nightstand, hoping it was the hospital or their father with news about Inuyasha, but she frowned when she saw the caller ID.

"What do you want, Kikyo?" she asked flatly. She had no desire to speak to her bitch of a cousin after what she'd done. She'd been right there in the middle of it, attacking her friend, and as far as Kagome was concerned, they were no longer family.

"You have to help me," Kikyo exclaimed. "They're trying to expel me. You have to tell them I didn't do anything!"

"But you did, Kikyo," Kagome replied, absolutely no concern in her voice for her cousin's situation. She hadn't thought twice about putting her name on the list Mr. Taisho had intended to give to the principal.

"Yes, I was there. I admit that, but I didn't do anything. You saw me! I was on the outside of the circle. I never touched the half-breed."

"You didn't need to touch him," the angry miko replied. "Your friends did enough of that for you. You deserve whatever you get for participating. Hell, you tried to stop me from trying to save him. You know, the doctors said just a few more kicks would have killed him. If I hadn't interfered when I did, he would be dead and you'd be in a heck of a lot more trouble than just expulsion."

"You're not going to help me?" Kikyo asked Kagome desperately.

"Not a chance in hell."
