Suddenly as if in reaction to my thoughts the small, soft hand clutched in mine begins to tug insistently, demanding freedom. And as it slips away the warmth lodged within my chest begins to cool and die away leaving only cold constriction in its place.

I cannot even find it within myself to feel anger at her defection as my own miscalculated selfishness was forcing her to face even more anguish.

I was a fool to believe that one brief moment of weakness meant she would choose to brave the half-breed's censure and harsh criticism to remain at my side.
