Holler Me Home by The Norrington

I Dream of Shippo

Kagome woke from her sleep with a cry and tears stinging her eyes.  Exhaustion lined her eyes in dark brown circles, and her hair was unkempt and sweaty.  Sesshomaru watched her awake with a cringe, but he held her close to his chest to keep her from trying to get down.  He had been carrying her for only a little over an hour.  She was majorly sleep deprived, and she was going to become ill if she kept this up.  She struggled weakly in his arms, but he did not loosen them.

"Do you have his scent?  A trail?  Anything?"

Not wanting to get her hopes up but refusing to say anything other than the truth, he nodded curtly.  The hope that bloomed through her scent made his stomach clench.  Because when he had nodded, he had been answering the anything part of her question.  He smelled blood.

Far too much blood.

The scene that greeted them at the end of their path was far too horrible for Kagome to handle.  She fell to her knees in her son's blood, fingers clinched tight in what remained of the small boy's clothing.  A thick maisma shrouded the area, and all knew that Naraku had struck a terrible blow this day.  Sesshomaru couldn't watch as she clutched Shippo's lifeless body to her chest and screamed.

And screamed.  And screamed...

With a jolt, Kagome bolt upright, the sleeping bag falling off of her face.  All was quiet in the camp, and some where in the back of her mind she registered that Sesshomaru was stoically keeping watch.  But right then all she noticed was the slightly snoring kit curled up next to her.

With a soft sob, she pulled him close against her, burying her nose in his soft fur.

Blearily, without opening his eyes, he reached back with a small hand and patted her hair.

"S'ok 'Gome.  'M right here," he slurred, dropping back off into sleep before the end of his setence.

Sesshomaru watched quietly, his eyes bright in the darkness, his hand resting gently on Tensaiga.

A/N:  I have no words to explain this one.  Was it a dream?  This is from Luna's Weekly Prompts, and it was Dream. 1/16/13
