Chapter 67: Visit

Are you sure your family isn’t a part of the Yakuza?” Kagome whispered as she walked beside her husband. Her eyes kept darting back and forth between the massive, three-story mansion and the few men in suits that were escorting them to the front doors.

I am sure.” Sesshoumaru took her hand and placed it on the crook of his elbow. “They are my mother’s security team.”

Kagome blushed. “But they all have silver hair!” she blurted out, smiling sheepishly when he snorted softly. “Well, except for Jaken-san… since he’s bald. How old is he now anyway? Seventy? Eighty? It seems like he hasn’t aged at all!”

Sesshoumaru chuckled, ignoring the way their little entourage had tensed at the sound.

Silly wife, are you not aware that it is rude to ask about an older male’s age?”

That’s for women, Maru-kun…”

It is the same thing.”

Whatever, dear.” Kagome rolled her eyes. “Anyway, why did your mom want us to come over? Not that I mind, but she hasn’t seen us since the wedding.”

The man frowned as they entered the foyer of the building. “She did not tell me.”

The group passed by numerous paintings and priceless artifacts, and Kagome was amazed by his mother’s extravagant displays of wealth. While she had known that Sesshoumaru’s family was rich, seeing it in person made that fact all the more believable. During their visits to his father’s estate, she had never gotten the impression of a thriving patriarch because Touga, as far as she knew, was not one to flaunt his belongings to his guests. His property was vast, but he had very few things to occupy it with. He was like a king with an empty kingdom.

You didn’t bother to ask?”

Mother has a roundabout way of providing answers. Her riddles annoy me greatly.”

So, that’s why you agreed to meet with her?” Kagome guessed, humming when Sesshoumaru inclined his head. “The direct approach is always good.”

It gets things done,” he said.
