Chapter 52: Appreciation

Ooh, these are pretty! What’s the occasion?”

Sesshoumaru loosened his tie and leaned down, accepting a kiss on the cheek and a hug from Kagome. He allowed her to take the bouquet of white blooms from his hand before he slipped out of his jacket, setting it on the back of one of the kitchen chairs.

They are called Snowdrops,” he answered instead, moving to wrap his arms around her from behind. His chin found a perch on her shoulder as he watched her stir the pot of soup on the stove. She was making oden again: Her favorite.

Humming softly, Kagome said, “It’s fitting. They do remind me a bit of snow. Where are they from?”

Europe.”

Ah.” Turning down the heat of the stove, she covered the boiling pot with a lid. Then, she twisted in Sesshoumaru’s hold and smiled, leaning into him. “You pulled some strings, didn’t you?”

Hn.”

There was a head tilt. “So, what’s up?”

The man quirked a brow. “With?”

You, of course! You sent for flowers from another country, Maru-kun. Why?”

I am a doting husband that cares for his wife. Must there be another reason?”

Yes,” Kagome stated blandly. “Come on. Out with it, mister.” Her lips brushed against the corner of his mouth. “I won’t keep my oden waiting for long.”

Sesshoumaru sighed. “I was offered a promotion today.”

That’s great!” Noticing his solemn look, Kagome added, “But why the glum face?”

I declined it.”

Why?”

Shrugging in response, he said, “I am already away from you for more hours than I would like. Taking the job would only extend that time.”

Kagome smiled at his unspoken gesture and reached up to cup his face. “I’m a big girl. I can take care of myself,” she told him gently. “If you really want the job, you should take it. But if you don’t, then that’s okay, too. We’re doing fine with what we have so far.”

Sesshoumaru didn’t even bother to reply, opting to lean into her hand and press a kiss to her palm. There had been words that had been left unsaid, fears and insecurities he hadn’t wanted her to worry about. But it was alright; she had understood.

And that’s all he could have asked for.
