Mortality

Disclaimer: Though it saddens me to say it, I don’t own anything relating to Takahashi-sensei’s Inuyasha. However, the plot and/or ideas of this drabble series do belong to me.

A/N: I like to sprinkle these, um, little interludes throughout the story to give insight into Present (coma) Sesshoumaru’s head. I’d like to think his innermost thoughts would be somewhat poetic rather than the usual, “I find you annoying, so die” kind of thing. *shrugs* But that’s just my opinion. :) Update 1 of 3.

Chapter 27: Mortality

Her skin had been soft and so pliable beneath his deadly hands. With a featherlight touch, he had taken to tracing circles on her open palms, fearing that even the slightest twitch of his fingers would have broken her into a million little pieces.

Hair as dark as a raven’s feathers had tumbled down her shoulders and framed her face in gentle waves–a stark contrast to the milky shade of her skin and the pillow she had rested on. If not for the various medical instruments strewn throughout the room and the stale smell of sanitizing chemicals in the air, he would have thought she’d been napping.

If his life had been a twisted fairytale, she would have been the slumbering beauty, and he, her tragic prince charming. Except, the cure to his princess’s predicament wouldn’t have been a simple kiss. Though if he had become desperate enough, he might have indulged in that farfetched notion eventually.

While he was glad that it hadn’t come to that, he’d become certain of one thing:

Humans were fragile, delicate creatures that in the blink of an eye, could be swept up in Time’s embrace and be forever beyond his reach.

The fact of the matter was still something he did not like to ponder about, for it had a habit of churning in his gut and plaguing his mind at the most inopportune moments–periods in which his thoughts lapsed into silence and doubts filled his head.

It was a most unsettling thing.
