Chapter 17: Torrent

Sesshoumaru remembered the anguished howl that had erupted from his throat when he’d found Kagome’s body on the floor of the nursery room.

It had felt like a thousand needles had pierced through his chest–each leaving a throbbing ache in his heart as well as a feeling of detached numbness that seeped into his bones. For one that had thrived on being in a constant state of motion, the woman had been disturbingly silent as she lay in a small pool of her own blood.

The redness of it had mocked him.

The scene had been imprinted so deeply in his mind that Sesshoumaru didn’t think even death would be enough to erase the memory.

Drowning in his despair, the man hadn’t bothered to mask the pain on his face as he made his way toward her form, eyes glazed over in shock. His legs had buckled beneath him, and it had taken all of his willpower not to collapse under the weight of his sorrow.

To his right, a bucket of paint had sat, its paint roller counterpart marring the hardwood floor with a messy splash of light cream.

On his opposite side, a ladder rested, overturned and abandoned.
