Chapter 16: Anticipation

She had probably been the happiest he’d ever seen her–glowing with warmth and life.

And just… beautiful.

Once Kagome had found out that there was a baby on the way, she’d dedicated her whole heart to making preparations for the little one’s arrival. Every moment was spent debating on names, the types of clothes and toys to buy, and the decoration of their child’s nursery room.

While Sesshoumaru had been away at work, she had taken on the task to do the latter herself; she used her spare time to arrange the furniture the way she liked it and even began the process of painting the walls a neutral color. Though it made no difference to him, she’d wanted the baby’s gender to be a surprise.

It was on one of these painting days that Sesshoumaru had ended his shift early at one of his father’s former companies and had come home, expecting an embrace from his jubilant female. But when he realized the usual welcome wasn’t forthcoming, a feeling of unease had washed over him.

Two things had become apparent as his stomach dropped with dread:

The house had been completely silent… with only the scent of blood permeating the air.
