The Grey Scale by Lady Kirara

Welcome Home

Welcome Home

“Please?” Kagome begged for the umpteenth time.

“No!” He berated again.

“Sesshoumaru-sama said that you were here if I needed you. And I need this!” Kagome hated to resort to whining, but she was bored.

Jaken hung his head in his hands. It was his own fault she’d even seen it in the first place. He had only done as he’d been told and gone to water the plants down below. The whole ordeal was very hush-hush. Sesshoumaru-sama had very strict rules after all. How was he supposed to know she’d been following him? She was a miko! She could easily shield herself from him. It was rather unfair, really.

He’d shooed her away the second he realized she was there but the damage had been done. Sesshoumaru-sama would undoubtedly hear about it when he returned, but he wouldn’t make it worse by allowing it a second time.

Kagome had spent the better part of the past hour continuously begging him to take her back down. She wanted to explore, she’d said. “Sesshoumaru-sama said to make myself at home.” She tried again.

Knowing he would get no work done any other way he finally gave in. Throwing his hands in the air he glowered at her. “So be it you insufferable woman.”

Kagome beamed at him while he rummaged through his desk looking for the key.

The two walked in silence down the familiar halls, Kagome hardly able to contain her excitement. Ever since she’d caught a glimpse of the vault the night before, she couldn’t help but be drawn to it.

Jaken had just pushed the small golden key into the lock and turned it until he heard the familiar click. He  had to wonder just how much trouble she would cause him when all was said and done.

Before he could open the door and allow her entrance, however, her excitement rose to an unparalleled level and she exclaimed, “He’s back!”

Her earlier joy at seeing the treasures hidden away were taken over by the overwhelming (and rather shocking) want to see him. Leaving a stunned Jaken where he stood she raced back through the halls eager to meet him.

Though her excitement confused her, she was somewhat relieved. Sesshoumaru had been gone for almost two weeks, and though the two of them had spoken nearly every day on the phone, it wasn’t the same as having him there.

In the time they’d spent apart she realized just how much he’d come to mean to her. It was true that in the beginning his presence in her life had been more of an anchor to those she’d left behind and lost. Over time, they’d become friends, and not having him hear, made her realize what an integral part of her life he’d become.

She knew she was probably being undeniably silly and ridiculous, but she didn’t care. The sudden revelation had her worried; she knew he couldn’t possibly think the same. When she rounded the corner the doorknob was already turning and a familiar head of silver hair looked up to meet her smile. “Welcome ho-”

A second man was trailing just behind Sesshoumaru and when he looked up Kagome felt as though the wind had been knocked from her chest.

“Shippou?!” Without stopping to think she headed straight for him. His open arms caught her easily and she wept into his shoulder. “I thought I’d never see you again. I missed you so much.”

Sesshoumaru stared at the two with envy. He could feel Kagome’s overwhelming happiness all around them, and he took pride in the fact that he had a part in making it happen.

Kagome could hardly believe it. She had seen Sesshoumaru smile before, albeit they were rare, but they were becoming increasingly familiar over the past several months. And when she caught him staring at her through a thin veil of black and russet hair she knew her earlier worries wouldn’t be worries for long. She mouthed a silent thank you.

With a wave of his hand and a smile he tossed it aside. When their eyes met she knew, he’d missed her just as much as she’d missed him.

Maybe even more.
