The Grey Scale by Lady Kirara

A Friendly Interference

A Friendly Interference

Drinks in hand, two men sat side by side without speaking. The elder man in the navy suit flagged down the bartender and ordered another round for the both of them and turned to the second. Though he was younger than the first man, the second had an air of mystery about him, leading people to believe he was older than he looked.

The barman set their drinks down and the emerald gaze of the second man looked at his watch once more. Sesshoumaru couldn’t help baiting the young man. “Last I checked, you didn’t have the ability to manipulate time… I doubt staring any harder will change that.”

“Keh.” Shippou waved the biting comment aside, “I could probably fly there faster myself.”

Sesshoumaru smirked at the familiar use in which his half-brother’s favorite dismissal was used. “It was you who rather insisted we fly commercial. Or should I remind you that we both have several private jets at our disposal.”

Shippou looked away, not denying anything. “Or maybe you’re just as nervous about seeing her as she is about you.”

That caught his attention. “Have you spoken to her since you got here then?”

Sesshoumaru nodded an affirmative. “She got your little message in the cupboard. Jaken had a fit I might add.”

“I thought he might enjoy that. The imp needs a bit more excitement in his life if you ask me. Does she know where you are?”

“Kagome knows that I’m away on business, which isn’t strictly a lie, but she doesn’t know you’re returning with me.”

“Excellent.” With a clap of his hands Shippou’s sullen mood improved immensely. “Speaking of Kagome,” Shippou hedged, “How exactly did she end up in your house in the first place? A woman her age should be living on her own, and the Kagome I remember was always independent.”

“It took some convincing.” The delirious look in Sesshoumaru’s eye clearly conveyed there was more to tell, but it was clear to Shippou that Sesshoumaru was less than comfortable talking on the subject. It only stood to make him all the more curious.

“What kind of convincing?” Shippou pried.

Sesshoumaru wouldn’t have it. “Mind your place. I’m still your superior.”

The announcement overhead left the men packing their things and heading to their gate. Shippou hadn’t thought much of Sesshoumaru’s brush-off. If he had truly crossed the line, Sesshoumaru would have had no qualms about dealing with the issue right there in the bar.

As they each took their seats in the first class cabin and the plane took towards the sky Shippou had to wonder. The casual lack of command in Sesshoumaru’s tone meant the conversation wasn’t over.

Not even close.
