Renewal Effect by Aviel

Breakdown

Disclaimer: Though it saddens me to say it, I don’t own anything relating to Takahashi-sensei’s Inuyasha. However, the plot of this fanfic does belong to me as well as any OCs that may show up along the way.

A/N: Started another story. I know. I’m crazy.

Chapter 1: Breakdown

Kagome swallowed the bile that rose in her throat.

Bloodied fingertips pressed against her cheek in a gentle caress.

“…You’re safe?” her male companion said, his voice hoarse.

“Yes. It’s all thanks to you.” The miko gave him a watery smile. “You made it in time.”

A hacking cough was heard and a trail of crimson dribbled from the corner of his mouth.

“I’m glad I…” He struggled to breathe. “…I did something right for once. I don’t think I’m…”

He didn’t finish.

Kagome held in a hysterical sob as she was haunted by a pair of dulling, golden eyes. She held his hand to her face, ignoring how his arm went slack in her desperate grip.

“All you need is a little rest, that’s all! You’ll be fine!” she said, wincing when her voice cracked at the end. “Just stay with me!”

“Sorry, K’gome,” he murmured, trying but failing to keep his eyes open for her sake. “I love you…”

“I love you!” Kagome’s heart stopped when his breathing slowed. “I love you! Please don’t leave me!” the woman whimpered pleadingly.

There was a single, shuddering breath.

…And then his chest didn’t rise again.

“Hey, Inu?” Tears blurred her vision as she ran a hand through his matted silver locks. “Inuyasha? Answer me.” A keening wail left her lips as she grabbed the front of his haori. “Please!”

The silence was deafening.

A/N: Due to a previous mistake, this story's rating has been bumped up to MA. So, TO ALL MINORS, I'm very sorry to say it, but this is the end of the road for you.
