 Only If For A Night

Chapter One: Remberance

A/N: Oh I know what you're thinking. Another story when you haven't finished the other ones? Yes. But this one is amazing. Enjoy.

Kagome sat up wide awake to the sound of a child crying. Although exhausted, she slipped out of bed and shuffled her way across the cold wood floor to a crib that rested in a corner. She leaned down and peered into the gold eyes of her young son. He stared back up at his mother and if looks could kill his would be a very well contender.

“Oh my little Nozomi, did you have a bad dream?” Kagome whispered softly, rubbing soothing circles on his stomach.

Small hands reached upwards and Kagome happily obliged. Lifting her one year old son into her arms, Kagome left the bedroom and walked down the hall into the kitchen. Using the skills only a mother possessed, she made a cup of tea and sat down at the table. Nozomi watched his mother drink her tea with wide intuitive eyes and Kagome smiled sweetly at him. His hair was a fair blond but she knew it would turn silver in the years to come; his eyes were a rich gold color and in the middle of his forehead sat a small perfect crescent moon.

Kagome leaned down and kissed the moon earning a giggle from her son. “Are we better now? Hm?”

Nozomi only yawned before burying his face into Kagome’s neck. The young woman rinsed her cup and set it out to dry before walking back to her room. Instead of placing Nozomi back in his crib and returning to her own bed, Kagome opened the door that led to the private balcony and sat down in the swing.

Outside the night was quiet and dark. Kagome pushed against the floor gently causing the swing to move slowly back and forth. She knew Nozomi had fallen asleep long ago but she felt no need to move from her seat. Her home sat on a few acres of land just an hour outside of Tokyo. It was peaceful and reminded her of the feudal era, one of the many reasons why she had chosen the property. Money had not been a problem since Kagome had become a successful writer since returning from the feudal era. It was ironic how her adventures all those years ago had become a popular series and in turn provided a stable life for both her and Nozomi.

Blue eyes peered down at her sleeping son and memories returned of a time not so long ago that Kagome had felt hopeless and lost.

“Kagome?”

Her mother’s voice drifted down the dark well shaft and the young woman cried even harder.

“Kagome, what happened? Are you okay?” Kagome couldn’t respond with words. “Dad, Souta come quickly, it’s Kagome!”

The next few hours became a blur and it wasn’t until she was clean, bandaged and in her bed did she fully realize what had happened. The jewel…was complete. A wish had been made…a pure unselfish wish but everything magical came with a price. Kagome remembered a gut wrenching feeling like she was being pulled in two different directions. There was dizziness followed by a cry before everything went dark. When she came to she was lying in a heap at the bottom of the well. Only this time the magic was gone and the well remained simply a dried up hollow ghost of what once was her connecting portal to those she loved and cherished.

Her mother held her throughout the grieving process until the tears could no longer come. For a few weeks after the tears had stopped, Kagome entered a state of depression and she moped around the house uncaring about everything and everyone. It was during those weeks that her mother noticed the first few signs. At first she wrote them off as effects from her daughter’s depression but one day when Kagome was strangely responsive she asked when she had last received her menstrual cycle.

It was two little lines that changed Kagome’s world.

Disbelief. Denial. Acceptance.

It was not until her first ultrasound and she saw her baby that the truth became reality. Her mother was supportive and never once questioned the identity of the baby’s father until Kagome came forth with the story one winter night.

It had nothing to do with love. It had simply been a primal desire filled with attraction and need for one another. Kagome had never intended for it to happen and she was sure he had not either but in the aftermath they remained what they were in the beginning. Allies. Thinking back on it, Kagome had decided that they were better off that way.

As her belly grew larger, Kagome began to wonder if he was still alive and out there somewhere. And she searched but found nothing. It was a hopeless endeavor from the beginning she supposed.

The knowledge that her baby’s father was not around brought with it a dark truth. She had barely finished high school during her time in the feudal era and had missed the exams to enter college so her best options were bleak and underpaid.

When winter turned into spring, Kagome started to write. At first it was to help her remember so that one day she could tell her child about its father and all her friends. And then it was her mother who turned into a career. By the time Nozomi was born her book series had been sold and she would never need to worry about their lives again.

Nozomi was a blessing and in turn Kagome had given him a name that meant hope. She had never wanted to know the sex of the baby because she figured since the pregnancy had been a surprise so should the gender. When he was born Kagome was frightened that he would have the ears of a hanyou, not because she was against half breeds because she wasn’t, but rather in fear of the doctor and nurses reaction. Imagine her surprise when Nozomi came out pink, screaming and looked human. At the time Kagome didn’t care, he was hers and he was perfect.

A few weeks after his birth and they were settled into their new home, Nozomi began to change. It was subtle at first. His ears became pointed; his fingernails remained sharp and grew constantly, his eyes lightened from hazel to gold and he grew at an alarming rate. By three months old he was crawling and by nine he was walking. He could speak a few words but he was shy about it. The moon on his forehead was a recent development and proved a frightening fact. He was his fathers son.

It had been difficult at first thinking back on it but she had preserved and succeeded. There were times that a slight depression overtook her and in those times she became a hermit and looked herself away to write. Kagome continued to swing gently until dark became light and the shadows melted away taking with them their secrets.

Nozomi began to stir long after the sun had risen and Kagome decided to began her day. She fed her son and herself before placing him in his toy area while she took a quick shower. Once they were both dressed, Kagome buckled Nozomi into his car seat which included a brief argument about being restrained on his part. She sang along to the radio as they drove towards Tokyo and smiled at her son when he covered his ears in mock dislike.

She parked the car against the curb of the shrine and shouldered her bag before gathering Nozomi in her arms. It took a few minutes and a bit of heaving but Kagome finally crested the top step. The shrine stretched out in front of her and she softly smiled. It was nice to come home.

As she walked towards the small two story house Nozomi began to fidget in her arms. He whimpered and clutched his tiny hands to her blouse and Kagome peered down at her son in slight alarm.

“What’s wrong Nozomi?” He only clutched tighter and whimpered louder.

Being so concerned for her son, Kagome had failed to sense two powerful and close auras. Blue eyes narrowed and shot towards the quiet house. The auras were together and they were demonic. Fear filled Kagome’s chest and a dozen different scenarios played through her mind. She could turn around and call for help but what good would police do against two demons? She briefly imagined hiding Nozomi and dealing with the demons herself but that would mean leaving her son alone.

Mom…

A strong wave of terror flooded her senses as the thought of her mother, brother and grandfather being left in the house with two demons. Kagome looked around for a spot to place Nozomi that would hopefully keep him concealed enough to remain safe. However her senses tingled and she realized that the two auras were moving. And they were moving towards her.

Nozomi began to cry and Kagome tried to console him but his tiny claws pricked at her skin through her clothes. He was agitated and Kagome didn’t blame him. Whoever these two auras belonged to were strong enough to cause fright in even her.

Blue eyes widened at the realization that there was nowhere to run or hide. Kagome set Nozomi down on the ground and stood up raising a pink shield around them as she did. It was the best defense she had until she could see just whom she was dealing with.

Nozomi clutched her leg and whimpered causing Kagome’s heart to flutter. She could not lose her son. She would not.

“Kagome?”

The raven haired girl peered up and her heart stopped.

“Inuyasha?”

A/N: The chapters for this story will become longer but they won't be short either. I hope everyone enjoys this story because the plot is going to be fantastic.
